Checking bits and pieces this weekend before the Yorkshire trip. Changed rear diff oil which was looking a bit cloudy and there was a wee piece of metal on the drain plug. Checked 4wd (on gravel), working. Stuck difflock on, light goes straight on (didn't even flash which made me suspicious) but didn't sound like it was working...

Disengaged hubs and switched difflock back on then jacked up one rear wheel to see if she would pull herself off the jack. Wheel in the air turned but that was it. Jumped out to have a listen and all I could hear was a small clicking sound which stopped as soon as I switched off the difflock.

So difflocks knackered :( Guessing either selector fork or one of the gears. Made enquiries with a breakers to get a whole diff with difflock.

In the meantime I'm guessing I'm okay still using her as there's no noises from the axle. I'll just have to take a tip out of the Landrover boy's books and use plenty of momentum until the difflock is fixed! :doh

Tbh once I have my lokka fitted there won't be as much need for the rear difflock anyway :nenau

Ah Rob that must be such a downer, feel for you, hope you can get replacements or a Lokka soon but think the Lokka is the way to go, Rick

Cheers Rick, it's a right bugger and sod's law I only find out week before a trip :(

Design uses a selector fork which moves a sliding collar on the right hand drive shaft, teeth on the collar then engage with teeth on a side gear bolted to the carrier and you've got a locked axle. Problem is either a broken selector fork or a broken collar or rounded/broken teeth on the collar or side gear. You've got to take the whole diff out though just to fault find so I'm just as well trying to get a whole replacement diff to slot in at the same time :nenau

Like I said though I reckon I won't need it much once I fit the Lokka anyway so might just sit on it for a while before doing anything more about it.

What a bummer:doh

So long as she's still driveable you'll be ok with out diff lock:thumb2

Counting down now:D

Sad to hear mate but to be honest I don't think you will need it at all for most if not all greenlaning. Just pick the line.

I have heard there is a weak point in the patrol difflocks. Many people who use the axles for extreme winch challenge or ultra4 modify it to make it a more robust mechanism.

Also heard even though I think nissan say ok to switch it on at low speeds others have said not to turn it on while moving.

That's a batch mate. If it comes to it Steve and I will drag you round the moors. :)

Don't worry mate the Lokka bits will, be here soon enough :thumb2

Tsk, these fragile old 'trols, ain't arf glad I got one of them rufty-tufty Terrano's!

:augie

Cheers guys

Yeh Fez I've read the same while looking into what broke!

The cast selector fork and possibly the side gear on the carrier seem liable to break when given abuse. Reckon it happened that day I was offroading in 2WD as the back axle was getting some abuse with the front out of action.

I've looked into getting a new locker from likes of ARB but even imports are around £800 all in and I can just get a whole used rear axle for £500 so not worth it. With that Lokka that Banshees :)thumbs) sorted out fitted I'll probably not get much use out the difflock anyway so I may not do much about it for now.

Keep and eye out you can get standard axles even cheaper, the 3.0s are more plentiful.

Or even cheaper just for the diff.

So technically this means that my car (for the moment is more capable) than yours? :sly :kissy

Technically... yes  :lol

Mainly if bogged down in mud but the articulation from having front and rear live axles will help me a lot in most other scenarios :p

Yeh bud it's the diff on it's own (with locking bits) that I've enquired about :thumb2

Fingers crossed...

Thats a bugger. This lokka sounds like an interesting addition.

Hope you get it sorted but as said very much doubt you'll need difflock greenlaning

Well tried a couple breakers and they'll only sell a complete axle

I'll stick with the Lokka for now and maybe grab an aftermarket difflock next time I feel particularly flush...

Locked front axle more use than a locked rear in my opinion anyway :nenau
