Hi guys bought another Terrano today as I'm clocking up the miles in my modded one not to mention the missis keeps whining about getting in and out of it :lol

It's a 98 Terrano 2.7 tdi Bosch afm

I bought cheap knowing it had a starting issue but where do I start the seller said its had a recently new starter, battery, alternator.

Had a quick peak and they all look clean and new.

So anyway when I collected it today I tried starting it and I sounded like a sluggish starter motor ??

The chap then said we'll have to bump it !!
Yeah right not on a muddy farm track thanks , so we tow started it approx 10 yards and vroom she fired up no probs

I then drove her home about 150 miles didn't miss a beat !!

Got home thought I'd turn it off then try it straight away and nope it turned over sluggish again.

Where do I start ??

Congrats on the new motor mate :) Check the voltage across the battery when engine is off and engine is on, should read 12v off and 13/14ish on.

Try a different battery if you have one to hand, that's where I'd start first, I'm sure some more of the experienced boys will be along soon :D

Check connections at battery, could be cracked. Even if there is power reading past it if there is not enough for the starter it will be sluggish or even not turn at all.

Also check connections at starter motor.

If in doubt use a jump lead from positive on battery to starter positive and the other jump lead on negative from battery near the ground area near the starter.
Then try starting as normal with that hooked up, will help trouble shoot bad connections.

.

Il try my battery off my other Terrano first then that's only a few moths old and starts it no probs

Was thinking maybe a dodgy earth too.

I would of thought if the battery was going dicky I'd have dimming lights to ?

check the battery clamps they can brake and look like they r ok but wont carry the heavy load which is needed to start the car :thumb2

First thing I'd do is take a jump lead from battery negative to a good ground point to eliminate the earth strap

Wot they all say.. bad lead somewhere.:thumbs

Jump leads are your friend. here, you can use them to bypass wires, and see if it improves, then you know which wire to worry about.

Hi guys a little update tried the battery in my other terrano which I know is perfect still didn't start the new truck starter still sounded really sluggish ?? Tried the battery out of my new truck in my other terrano and battery fired it up no probs

So I can rule out the battery I had a look at the terminals on the battery and again swapped them over from truck to to truck they were fine on my old truck so I can rule them out

I had a look at the earths from the battery to the inner wing then to the engine and they looked ok

Are there any other earths that I should look for ??

Tomorrow I'm going to run a positive wire from my battery direct to the starter positive and then run a negative from my battery direct to the starter

If I'm correct this will prove if the starter is working or not wont it ??

Why not try your good starter in your truck, at least you will rule the starter out

Run a jump lead from the earth on battery to somewhere on the block or gearbox, just clip it on to a large clean bit of cast

Don't Mention the Starter Motor, supposed he has one that turns the wrong way, it could take weeks to sort it out...:lol:lol:lol

Just a quick update bought a new starter today and took the 2 earth straps off the drivers side wing and cleaned them back to bare metal drilled 2 new holes in the wing for them also cleaned where they join the head.

Bought new battery clamps and will be fitting in the next hour or so will post back after new starter is fitted.

I must say the starter I removed sounded like it something loose inside ??

It had had a new starter fitted before you bought it or did it turn out to be a shiny clean old one.

.

NOT GOOD !!!!!!!:(

I fitted the new starter connected the battery back up and the battery was low on charge as I'd been messing around with it all day so I put my other trucks battery in there.

Key in the ignition, glow plug light goes out after approx 15 seconds then turns the key mmmmmm starter turning really fast or as I should do but not firing at all doesn't even sound like its going to fire

Tried this a couple of times but nothing just turning over and not firing !!!!

A new problem now !!!!!!

Had the intercooler off today cleaning it out and had a look and the glow plugs which look brand.

Looks like they've just been taken out of the box and fitted ?

I had my old glow plug relay in the cupboard which I know works perfect fitted that but still no joy !!!

So now it turns lovely but doesn't fire ???
