Hello everone.

Just joined and hope someone can help with a problem we have with a 2003 Patrol SVE TD Automatic on which the timing has suddenly advanced (we think) with a real sharp diesel knock when started and running. It's fitted with the ZD30 (ZD30DDTI) and we belive a Bosh VP44 Pump.

We would like to send the pump for testing and repair as necessary and wouild ask if any member could recommend a facility to undertake this.

Alternativly if anybody has experianced a similar issue? how did they resolve / fix this please.

Many thanks and appologies in advance if this is already covered on the forum.

Hi and Welcome sir :thumb2

Sorry to hear that!!! Without a doubt I would always say Diesel Bob as specialists go, I've heard nothing but good words about him on here, Vegetable Oil Diesel and via word of mouth.

Even just brought a set of Viton seals for my Bosch VE pump on my 2.7 Terrano, I'll be stripping down a spare soon and fitting vegetable oil proof seals all around

Please hang around and keep us posted with how you get on with plenty pics if possible :naughty

The rest of the gang will be along soon

Many thanks.

The problem has had my local garage guys scrathing their heads for a while but we are making some progress after today.

Look forward to hearing from the rest of the gang, as and when.

Hi mate and welcome, I'm a Terrano owner with the 2.7 so I can't really offer advice on the 3.0. I was thinking though if it could be anything to do with the engine timing, when did the belt last get changed, I think it has a belt anyway, or if it has a chain they can stretch with enough miles on them, I'll get back under the stairs now :D

Hello and welcome. I've a 3ltr terrano with 140k on the clock and, touch wood, no engine issues yet. :D
The top end is chain driven but I would imagine it would need plenty of abuse to get the timing out that far, if it is even possible.
As said there are a number of 3ltr owners here so hopefully someone can shed light on this:thumb2

Welcome bud! Nice to see another Trol owner :thumbs

I had a 3.0 Y61 for 4 years before I got my Y60 but I never heard of that happening

Injection pump is still gear driven on the 3.0 (only the cams are chain driven - off the pump actually) so I can't see how the timing would get out of kilter :nenau

The Aussie Trol forums like patrol4x4.com or nissanpatrol.au might be able to shed some light on the issue :nenau

Many thanks for the messages of welcome and the information and recommendations, which are proving most helpful

We are currently trying to confirm which pump is actually fitted to the engine. We know what it should be but cannot confirm this from just viewing what can be seen in situ. Next move is to put the veh on a lift and see if we can determine from underneath before planning our next move.

Cheers to all for now....

remember to mark everything up for timing before removal

Hello to all.

OK marking the timing yes very good point and I'm going to assume my Garage Guys will have done this as they have been at the repairing vehicle game for a long time very succesfully. These are a group of real mechanics who are very rarely phased by anything.

The pump turns out to be a ZEXEL 109342-4026 as I understand these are manufactured in Japan under licence from Bosh?

Anyway long story short, quick phone call with Diesel Bob yesterday and pump now on its way to him for some of his TLC.

Cost £$%&*+"!? bleep bleep bleep! but insagnificant against the £2.7K for replacement from Nissan!!!

Cheers for now....

costly but could d bob not suggest something befor removal and posting.
the whole 3.0 is solid gear driven like the 2.7 except the cams are chain and they never go wrong or stretch as to short a chain to worry about.
hope its sorted as i have 3.0 as well and all problems are food for the brain.
mine has the intermittent oil warning light comes on now and again.

It'll be the high oil pressure switch mate, down driver's side of engine, put a new one in or fit an oil pressure gauge and earth the switch :thumbs

b its a common fault,i did make sure plenty of oil was getting around.

Hello All
Well the Patrol is back on the road following, as in Diesel Bob's own words:
"Full as new rebuild of Nissan 3.0 TD diesel injection pump Zexel (VP44)"
Total cost from D Bob £625 plus VAT and collection and return shipping making a total of £774. I would say worth every penny as the engine runs again as sweet as a nut! One small hic-up when the pump was refitted and engine started the engine management light was still showing even though the engine sounded perfect? Long story short, pump back to D Bob for recheck on his test bed, returned and refitted and hey presto engine runs without any lights showing and sounded even sweeter than the first time and I would say better than when we first aquired the truck. All in all a bit of a drawn out job but succesfull in the end.

I must mention the mechanics at our garage who were determined to make this superb truck run again and spared no effort to get it sorted, a great job.

We also used the opportunity to have the wheels recoated as they really were looking very tatty and again this was arranged by the garage and what a fantastic job the wheel people did. This 2003 Patrol now looks absolutly stunning and I am very pleased with the end result.

Overall very little change out of £1800 but hey this is a big boys truck and I am well passed crawling about them to repair and to be honest I would not know where to start.

Regards to all and thank you for the words of wisdom.

Awesome mate, sounds like you really dropped on with the garage :thumb2
Any chance of some pics with the new wheels on?:D

bit sad ip had to go back to db a second time though.
