Well it had to happen!!
went to fuel up yesterday on my way back to work, rushing as the station was full and I was late and guess what ..........

Started to put PETROL in -banghead-
Don't believe I did it, went to the only pump that is petrol only.
Anyway only put £2.00 in and then put £8.00 of dev in to get me back to work.

Looks like I am draining the tank tomorrow.

hi paul
put 1/2 tank in mine drove from london to shrewsbury and used most of it
no problems with it since (30,000 mls)
Tony

Thanks,May just let it run through then.
Drove it to work & back to day with no smoke.

In days of yore, before oil companies put winter additives in diesel to prevent it waxing, I understand that it was common practice to add up to 25% of petrol to a diesel tank in winter. Just fill up with diesel when you get the chance and don't worry.

Cheers
Andrew

Back to work at 2 so will fill her up then.. with diesel 8) (I hope)

I wouldn't have thought that £2 worth of petrol would make any differance.

On the other hand if it was £2 of diesel in a petrol tank 8O

Just wack some diesel over top and keep fingers crossed.

i cant see that making any difference only couple litres after all!

Feel such a you know what! as I drive for a living..
Just going to keep away from Christine's mr2..

Did the same thing myself a few months ago. Put about 3 litres if petrol in before i realised.Tank was almost empty so i filled up to the brim with diesel to dilute as much as possible. Have done arround 2,000 miles since without problems.

Did some research, at the time, to try to put my mind at rest, came accross many accounts of putting petrol in the diesel tank over winter to prevent waxing in the days before anti-waxing additives. Overall it seems that it is only the more modern common rail engines that really suffer if petrol gets into the system, for these types of engines it a case of do not even attempt to start the engine, and get the tank drained ASAP. Luckily the old Terrano/Mav is not blessed with these modern technological refinements, and being only one step up from a tractor can cope with the odd abuse of this kind.

Just keep filling her up with Diesel, and she shouldn't suffer any ill effects from a bit of petrol in the tank, just don't go making a habit of it just in case

I would think that the small amount of petrol that was mixed into the diesel will have little or no effect other than to raise the octain level a tad and thats not a bad thing, as it will clear the crap ( am i allowed to say that :p ) from the top end.
Lots of garages rely on numpties like us to supply them with winter fuel heating. Thats what happens to what they drain from the tank. Come to think of it they charge us as well :?

For what its worth i dont think it will hurt anything either! I used to own Isuzu's and in their owners manuals it recmoended up to 10% petrol in diesel in cold climates (obviously colder than ours :!: ) so dont worry about it!

I once filled a 2cv from empty to the brim with diesel, so you aren't the only one

I rely on people putting a bit of diesel in their petrol cars to kep my garden tractor running on the fuel that gets drainied out

it works great in two stroke engines as well so every cloud has a silver lining!

Even thats not too much of an issue, friend of mine put a few quids worth of diesel in his rally car back when the colour coding changed on the pumps, just filled it with petrol and we ran the car till nearly empty before the next rally. Smelt like a bus mind you.
