Hi folks

I drive a 1997 Terrano II, 2.4cc SWB which I aquired recently. I am well pleased with it but have encountered a few teething problems.

The mainfold is blowing where it is joined to the front pipe. I believe that there is some kind of metallic gaskget between and that this would not burn
away / perish.

My question is can I just nip up the nuts. I am a little dubious about doing this as they look quite brittle and I dont want to shear them off.

Secondly the engine runs a little lummpy in idle with the rev counter showing dead centre between 0 - 1000rpm is this a consequence of the exhaust problem? Any ideas, suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks Banksy

i just replaced the gasket on my tdi, it was £2 from my motor factors. at that price id just replace it. as for the nuts, they were tight on mine too but providing you dont 'round' the edges they should come undone. hope that helps

totally different gasket on the petrol engine its 2 stainless steel rings. Nissan only part.

Are you sure its the joint thats blowing I've yet to see a petrol model that hasn't got a crack in the exhaust manifold. You need to remove the heat shield to see it, usually on to where between 2 and 3.

If either joint or cracked manifold this can cause bad idle as the ecu tries to get the fuelling right but the lambda sensor is being upset by air getting in to the exhaust.

Thanks

I will check for cracks, if it is cracked what do you reccomend?

I and others have welded theirs up. I ground it to a bit of a V, took it for a blast to get the manifold as hot as possible (cast iron is best welded with a controlle dheat and cooled slowly) and immeadiately dived in with the mig turned up to full.

This seemed to work - if you don't weld yourself, you may have to find a friendly garage as I suspect many wouldn't want to do this type of job but it has worked for me and others.

Think I've got a couple of spare rings that I never fitted to mine - got a diesel now.

had the same prob with my 2.4(amongst other things)i followed trex's instructions on welding the manifold and so far so good.
i also nipped all the bolts up as they had worked loose but i didn't over do it.

Thanks guys

Thanks guys I will give it a go and report back
