hi,

needing / well wanting 2 propane cylinders for caravan, have 2 empty 4.5kg
butanes to trade in. Discovered local Morrisons dont do red propane anymore
just blue butane and a new design bbq/patio gas which is red and green
in cylinder/bottle.

theres a proper calor centre quite close by, but anyone know if say b&q or
somewhere else will have good priced selection of red'uns, wanting next size
up which is 6kg though book also mentions a 13 kg. Dealer gave me a screw
in regulator kindly in exchange for my blue screw-in. suspect 2x13 may be too
much for van locker and chassis, anyone?
 
i went to the local recycling centre asked if hed take my little propane cylinders, he said yes, so get a key for th ecage, when it was open i asked if i could have the big one that was there, he said sure, its just recycling. with out the paper work for him..
 
down my way you can take your bottles to any supplier and change up or down sizes, you only pay for gas, i have a mate who works for calor gas and he tells me the price has gone through the roof lately, :nenau :clap
 
I use a lot of gas in several sizes, calor are the most exspensive suppliers and least flexible on bottle changes they charge a fortune deposit!

from anywhere else you can get any size bottles you want for nothing, they dont charge anymore.

I usualy use a large gas bottle for our caravans 19kg standing outside the front and put it in the boot when traveling, with a little calor gas one as a back up if I run out as you can get that refilled anywhere, as each supplier will only fill or exchange their own bottles.

Likewise if traveling abroad you would need calor and keep it in the locker on the caravan.

the camping and caravan club have recently made a new rule 'banning' large external gas bottles, but i was at a site that had one of their 'rally's' last week and there were loads of people still doing it!

I pay around £15 for a 19k refil or around £12 to £13 for a 6 kg calor, it is not much of a choice as far as I can see!
 
cheers kinda knew could swap size for another size, even type but was wondering
if gas price same or if someone wants to undercut calor at their game oh and save
me a trip, guess call before setting off.

would i be right in thinking 13kilo cylinders are the type you might use in a portable
gas heater so 6's are biggest likely will fit in locker and 3.9s are the equivalent
of my stumpy 4.5 butanes.

in CC book in Ireland section mentions 19s and 47s, the latter being I imagine the
type usually found with static caravans.
 
yes 13 kilos are the sort for a mobile heater, though i have managed to squeeze on into many caravan front lockers!

as for the cylinder numbers i really dont know, I have a lot of calor bottles knocking around (both propane and butane) though and could have a look (if I remember) when i get a caravan in with a full calor bottle i keep it and use them in the front locker on long journeys so I don't have to keep hauling a big bottle in and out of the boot when we stop for a cuppa or a rest. This way I have accumulated a lot of empties, but they dont like giving the deposits back!

in my experience the price per kilo seems to peak value for money wise on a 19k cylinder and if it is standing outisde then it uses no more space than a 13and doesnt weigh that much more.

I did get a windfall of a few 47k cylinders for £20 each last winter but they are so flippin cumbersome they are only any use to me when on our own land and at proper prices are no better value.
 
cheers plank, see losts on CC rallies with larger size not biggest and carry in boot, some
have even made cradles to support 'em or stop rolling about in car. prefer to keep it legit
with largest van locker can accomodate, CC book gives dimensions so maybe have a
measure but suspect 6's will be official size.

I've been running the propane 6kgs in my van, it's the biggest the gas locker will take. I pay about £15 per cylinder. I read in the C&CC magazine that there maybe a new rule coming out where you can't have cylinders located outside the gas locker when in use, something about fire risk and falling risk.

I did see somewhere that you can get a re-fillable system for caravans and you refill them using autogas from any fuel station. Maybe worth thinking about if you use a lot of gas. I priced it up and found that for the price of one 6kg cylinder from Calor you can refill this system 6 times!! We have a lot of weekends away and i'm thinking about doing this, it's a DIY type thing.
 
Hi Richard, the only sensible size for your van is 2x6kgs propane.

As for price its a lottery to where you are in the UK:eek:

I've changed pale blue british gas butane cylinders for propane at the storage site I use, no questions asked about the cylinder, told calor just spray them their colour when filling.

Also had some at the local tip.

Hi scubadude, I have been using the Gaslow refillable system since Aug 2004, the system was fitted in my Bailey Pageant then swopped to the Senator in 2006. At the moment it costs just over £5 to fill the 6kg bottle. pm me if you want to know more. Syd

I not PM Gadgetsyd, as related query, is that the system featured in a recent CC article
assuming you get their mag, mention of new fit for life piping too.

where do you get your refills?

sounds like could be worth having one refill bottle and 1 regular bottle to optimise use
yet always have calor available.

do you use an auto switch over system or rate them, guess this question applies to
anyone with a 2 bottle system.
 
Hi Terrano2, You are correct, the Gaslow system I have is the one in the CC mag, I was one of the launch customers for the system in 2004 Two bottles, a 6kg and an 11kg (I couldn't fit 2 x 11kg in the Pageant no room) I also use an auto changeover valve. The latest Gaslow bottles come with a contents gauge, the auto changeover is great I have used one for nearly 10 years no probs at all, the system is also fitted with the all stainless pipes, having had two regulators blocked previously.
I fill up usually on the way out or home at the M3 services or any garage selling LPG, the limiting factor is can I get a 41ft rig between the pumps and the shop without hitting something. As an emergency Gaslow do a pipe that connects a Calor propane bottle to the auto changeover valve.
I have fitted a fill point on the T2 so that if desperate I can take a bottle out of the 'van and go off site to fill it. Syd
 
I saw the atticle on no external large bottles in a c&cc magazine recently, I wonder what twit dreampt that one up? but fortunately no one seems to be paying any atention to it!

but it only takes a few overzealous 'give a little man a little power' type wardens to start complaining and it is more exspense for everyone.

while undoubtedly there are risks associated with usin protable gas, I would have though the ease and accsecibility with which an external bottle can be moved away from a fire is a positive point?

It is worth remebering though gas bottles (like all large heavy items) need to strapped down when being transported! also some insurance policies now give a maximum limit for gas that can be carried inside a vehicle! My natural cyniscism suggests that this is an attempt to get tradesmen who carry gas etc to pay higher premiums more than anyhting elses.

If you have a calor depot near you where they refill, refurbish etc as opposed to just a retail outlet, try them. I've been buying mine from out local depot for the last year or so and its at least 30% off retail.

will that be ok if swapping in blue for red, different sizes too? tbh was thinking they
would be dearer, guess worth making a call or 2.
 
its always worth making a call or two.. better to keep the cash in your own pockets than some one elses
