Be honest with me about my 1997 T2 2.7

Hi all,
first day of membership, done my introductions and had some friendly replies- so far so good! just bought a 1997 t2 2.7 tdi touring lwb. Am sitting looking at it parked at the rear of my house, not on the road as yet ,am waiting for plates to be swapped by the DVLA. So my question is and im sure this is the best place to ask- what are they like? what am i in for? i drove it back from its first owner and apart from a slight wheel wobble and the feeling that the ABS is coming in (which i think may need new discs and pads) it seems powerful and capable. The reason i went for the t2 was its towing capabilities and the price was right for the condition of the vehicle. Look forward to your comments.

hi wayne and welcome.

well i think there great mine still brings a smile
to my face 3.5 years on. its a great jack of all
trade.

we caravan with it, off road it, its a people carrier.....

probably my favourite recommendation is that
a couple of years back green flag mayday, the
caravan club's breakdown service bought atleast
one to loan to members whilst their car was being
fixed and allow them to continue their holiday.

reckon that says it all, a tug capable of handling
any uk spec 'van. plenty of room for the holiday
and of course 4wd to get them of a muddy site.

ok maybe showing its age but until we can afford
a pathfinder, our faithful t2 will be tugging our van.

the t2 is said to be probably the best all rounder that nissan has made so far.i have a 97 lwb 2.7tdi se and apart from little age related problems that you get with any motor i can't fault it.you now have all the knowledge of the poeple on the site too so any little thing no matter how trivial it may seem can be sorted. :smile:

The T2 in my eyes is a very reliable 4x4,as are most jap motors,very capable of road and a great tug!!
Spares are quite easy to find and modding is relitavely easy as well!
Think you'll be very happy with your choice!!

I love mine to bits (most of the time :lol: )On the road I can chuck it around like my old hot hatches, on long trips I find it very comfey, off road it has been fine & has surprized me what it can do :smile: As for reliability in almost 2 years of owning it i've had to replace the water pump £90ish, thermostat £11, O/S/R wheel cylinder £9 rear brake pipe £2 & the MAF unit last month £45 so it's not alot really & they won't need replacing again for a long time (I hope) I compaired this lot to money i've spent on other cars i've had & in some cases I had spent the same or more in 8 months :roll:

Hi,
all very reassuring chaps, i feel a whole lot better. I appreciate that ther could be age related niggles but as i hoped sounds a very capable motor. In a previous post i said that the vehicle was needed to be capable of towing a horse and trailer,on road and on muddy fields, as well as doubling as the family vehicle. It sounds from your comments that it will tick all my boxes.

I would think so m8 as a lot of members are towing large caravans & horeboxes with T2's with out any probs I know of :smile: I had been looking at a trooper before getting the T2 & found that my son (6ft2" & growing) just didn't have the leg room or enough surport on the under side of his legs which the T2 did offer :smile:

Iactually cant wait to get her on the road, as ive said am waiting for the DVLA to change my plate over from my Freelander to my T2. Less said about the Freelander the better. Was constantly being reminded of the common faults that came as standard with the Land Rover. Does the T2 have any specific known faults that i would need to be aware of?

uneven tyre wear on fronts. resolved by tracking.

before going for the t2 was warned off with gearbox
failure by a friend and mechanic. yet in time had it
and been member of nfmoc, would say only heard of
1 may be 2 issues. maybe worth a search of site,
certainly one member put a newer box in his truck.

some have had problems with break clips in front
auto hubs and changed to manuals, sick of replacing
yet mine ok still.

someone mentioned corrosion around rear seat belt
mounts.

front foot wells prone to flooding if cavity behind front
mud flaps get gunged up. simlply remove flap and hose
out.

finally have a look thru workshop downloads as these
cover most of the common problems though again
are mainly routine maintaince anyway.
