Battery blows up

Hi, I did a very silly thing today!

Yesterday took the battery of my RRC to get it out of the way while I do some welding for the MOT on my inner wings and the front body mounts. Put the battery on charge at the back of the workbench to make sure its charged when I put it back on.

So today having welded the inner wing I had fabbed a front body mount and had it in the vice to dress the welds. Without thinking I just picked up the grinder and started grinding. After about 30s BANG and the battery looked like this, sparks must have gone near the battery and ignited the hydrogen.



I was covered in battery acid, fortunatly as I was grinding I had goggles on. Fortunatly we have a utility/shower room just off the garage so I ran in there and turned the shower on. It was really stinging by the time I got under the water but it seems no burns although skin is red and itchy in places.

So just a warning that a moments lack of thought could have severe consequ

i did a similar thing, and the battery case exploded and hit me on the forehead, sting aint the word for it i can tell you, i wont do it again thats for sure, well worth posting ian, :thumbs

I never really thought about about until a couple of years ago when I saw one blow on "The Garage" tv prog. It had been on charge and the dim whit mechanic just unclipped the cro whilst the charger was turned on After that I take care:thumbs

PERHAPS WE COULD OPEN THIS THREAD UP TO INCLUDE OTHER POSSIBLE RISKS

CORRECT USE OF JUMP LEADS FOR EXAMPLE.
I always connect jumper cables to charged battery first then to (+) side of flat battery then (-) pole.
But i have been advised to put the (-) clamp on a metal part of the engine instead to reduce the risk of Flash Over.
Then start the engine on charged car leave it running at a high tick over for a couple of minutes before trying to start other car/truck.
IS THIS THE CORRECT WAY?

A bloke i know lost an eye due to his trainee conecting a battery charger up the wrong way round, it was 15 plus years ago and chargers are better now, most would warn you of this, but the danger is still there.

I was told yesterday by a mechanic that putting the wrong rating battery on your motor could end in an explosion with the force to take out the front of your motor. VERY SCARY!!!!

Hi Big Dave.
not heard of that one ,but if you put to smaller battery rating on,it will over work the battery regarding cold cranking speed causing the battery to go through deep cycling while charging from alternator but in the short term i cannot see any risk to truck or battery.
Just a premature failure of battery.
THIS IS JUST MY OPINION SO PLEASE DONT TAKE IT AS FACT

Well I thought it was a bit over the top but he wasn't trying to get me to buy a battery from him as he had already told me he couln't get the one I needed, and suggested that I go to a battery specialist.
