Hi. I own a 95 mistral 2.7 td automatic .
I asked a local garage if they could change the gearbox oil . Not knowing if it had been changed or even topped up since the vehicle was imported.
I was met with a less than enthusiastic reply the main point being that the gearbox, torque converter, ancilliaries, and most of the underneath would have to come off .Removing the drain plug would only allow about 1/2 a litre of oil out.
Is this true?

most definately NOT true mate.

The auto transmission oil is easy to change, once the box sump plug has been removed use a clean tray to catch the tranny fluid in. wait until it has finished emptying then screw the sump plug back in. measure the amount of fluid that has emptied into the tray(somewhere inbetween 5 to 8.5 litres) so you then know how much new fluid you have to put back in.

When replacing the tranny fluid use dexron 3 automatic transmission fluid and this has to be poured into the transmission via the transmission dip stick tube under the bonnet, bit of a clart i must admit but it's the only way to get the fluid back into the transmission. Make sure that you replace exactly the same amount as you took out, do not overfill as this can and will cause shift problems.

once you are satisfied that the oil change is done start the truck in park and while the handbrake is still applied put your foot on the footbrake and move the gear selector through the full range of gears pausing in each gear for a few seconds repeat this two or three times just to get the oil circulating thru the box. Then take the truck for a spin just to make sure that the gearchanges are correct. Job done and all for the cost of some transmission fluid and an hour of your time.

Best I've ever managed to get out of any autobox is 3 litre's. The garage is kind of right in the fact that most of the fluid is stuck in the torque convertor and the only way to get it all out is to actually run the car after getting 3ish litre's but I've never wanted to risk it.
