Hi, my hubs seem to work AOK, I have no history, is it a good idea to grease them or leave alone:bow

Is there a definitive method of checking the hubs, they sorta clunk on selecting 4WD, but as the diagram shows a dog clutch [I think] I guess that is OK, they disengage OK. Jack up one side wheel will spin, driveshaft stationary if that is the right way to check:bow

I got it too late for real snow last year, just slush:doh, want to be ready for this year in case

to check auto hubs get under neath the front and turn front prop should only turn a little in either direction if it keeps turning look for the drive shaft which is still turning and theres ur non working auto hub:thumbs

Hi guys, thanks for the feedback:bow, I will check drive shafts first, if they both fail to revolve I will then strip & grease the hubs.

Since I have had the mav I have done oils & filters pumped grease into UJ's, after the hubs what else may need looking at before the snow gets this far south. South Essex that is.

Are there grease nipples on the hand brake cables?.

One final thing for now, as I do not seem to have a mil light I assume no ecutalk socket under the dash! I cant find either:doh

if the drive shafts don't turn then your hubs are fine. You check by turning the short prop shaft near the centre of the car nearest to the passenger front wheel. From personal experience, if they are working I would leave them alone.
As your car is a 94 it doesn't have any engine management.

Front prop shaft on our Td models have 3 grease nipples, 2 for UJ 1 for slider.
Rear prop shaft has 2 grease nipples on UJ's.

Consider changing the rear diff oil, as it is a Limited Slip Diff, and requires 2.9 litres of LSD oil, there are plenty of threads on this, but I use Comma LSD oil, about £5 a litre.

It will come out grey and sludgy if it is over due, as it gets contamination with the friction material in the diff assembly, this is normal.

Check your strength of the antifreeze, you need 10 litres and 50% strength.

TIP:
If flushing out with fresh water, do it several times say 4 times, then drain, and because of the water left in, put in 5 litres of 100% strength antifreeze, and you should then obtain 50% strength.

Best regards, Rustic

get the car up on a ramp, lower the chassis onto lift rails and turn the front propshaft by hand, as you rotate clockwise, you will hear the auto hubs click on both sides, go anti-clock and they click again...........

Hi guys,
Thanks for the tips on checking the hubs. I guess you mean with wheels clear of ground, I have two trolley jacks will that do to lift chassis?

I did all my fluids soon after getting the mav, 12 months ago today, don't time fly.

Best ever motor & great club, certainly the best tenner I ever spent:clap:clap

Do I get a reminder to renew?

thats the idea, get the tyres off the deck, on the front at least........ don't forget the axle stands.....

As for the reminder, I'm sure that one of the mods will be round with a big wrench..... :)

Have fun

Dave
