:( :( anyone out there had same problem :?: 1996 mistral auto not shifting into top gear at all -been suggested could be one of 5 sensors know where 3 of them are -any help greatly appriciated

Hello Buzz and welcome to the club,

The very first thing you should do if you haven’t yet done it, is to change the AT oil and make sure it is at the correct level.

thanks - done that bit - more complicated problem trying to get fault codes to identify where sensors/solenoids located know theres one on pump /one on temp sender /one on speedo ,that tell it when to go into top
trying to loctate other two - seems to be a common problem but cant find anyone whos had it :?

Hi Buzz - I also have a Nissan Mistral (1994) but thankfully have not had this problem.

I would be interested in your solution though and where you find all the sensors - just for future reference. You never know! :|

MM.

i have a 95 mistral and i have had this problem every winter, until the engine warms up it never goes into top, i'm only talking say 5 ins of driving from ice cold start.

come warm weather never a problem, weird, been like it for 3 winters now lol

Have you tested the temp sensor in the AT?
There seems to be a couple of versions of this but I know a member managed to fix a problem he had with his not going in to top by adding a 1k resistor to the temp sensor wiring as it was reading low.

temp sensor seems ok - have sent to automatic specialists for diagnostic plug in -will post result if succesfull my moneys on the speedo sensor -well see 8)

up to now all sensors operating correctly - the faults is in the main ecu nothing at all wrong with sensors or auto box !!!!!!!

wish we had a fault code reader !!

once ecu fitted should have solved -if not will continue to post progress in order it may help someone not to be completely baffeled -as we were
auto boxes not our thing.........weve had 150 mistrals up to now, all auto
yet theres always a new fault awaiting discovery.......well i suppose thats how we all learn

will update next week

Took our Auto Mistral on holiday last week and auto gear box refused to shift up from 1st gear after we reached Birmingham!!

Had to get the AA to lorry us all the way back to London and had to start the holiday all over again in my Dad's Galaxy.

At least we had that option

Still - now we're home and still have the problem with the Auto Mistral outstanding.

Don't think I can afford a garage fix at the mo as the wife is on maternity leave and we're half way through a loft conversion! So I may have to put the Mistral fix on hold for a few months unless you guys have any suggestions for a novice mechanic.

With the Mistral you can do a manual Self diagnostic procedure.

First off you need a electronic service manual for the Nissan R20 series then turn to page AT 15, this has the procedure and the codes that are need to diagnose the fault through the A/T button.

I'm think the manual (CD)is available through the club.

I'll try and get PDF unlocked to copy if you can't get hold of the CD

Thanks Roscco - I have an electronic service manual for the Nissan R20.

I'll check this out later.

Thanks,
MM.

Auto Box

Hi
I have had this problem on and off over the last two years (5 times)
Change oil checked connections, each time I have booked it in it has worked ok, always ok in the summer, also if I hit speed bumps it has stuck in first, been ok from last december will read with interest what you find.

Cheers

Terry

I have the same problem no rhyme or reason just does it now and then even a bump can change to 1st and only at low speed.
Just flicking A/T button or stopping and switching off the engine and starting again resolves it.

Done the fault analysing test and it appears to be the speed sensor playing up. When I get time I'm going to try and find it to replace it and see the solves the problem.

Hi,

the self fault analysis procedure seemed to indicate the same problem on mine.

Although I was not sure what the ACC key setting was supposed to be?
You can only change gear when the key is set just prior to ignition.

Anyway I had a long flash and then 10 short flashes - again seeming to be inconsistent with the service manual text?

But if the first long flash is to be believed then I have a problem with the speed sensor.

Anyway - I've been a chicken and booked the car into JAPARTS to be fixed. I'll let you know what they say.

MM.

The Acc is the first notch that you turn the key which gives you the accessories like the radio etc..
I'll be interested ti see what they come back with

Bad news - JAPARTS say £1,600 to £1,900 to fix mechanical auto gearbox problem.

they say the checked the transmission oil and this was low. (I'm suspicious about this as the AA guy who checked over the car on the motorway checked it and said it was ok).

After filling up the transmission oil - they said no change.

They then said they undid the change from KM to MPH on the clock as this sometimes confuses the auto gear box ... Anyway that did not rectify the problem.

Therefore they say it must be mechanical and they would send it off somewhere else at the cost I mentioned above.

As I only paid £1,900 for it in the first place - this means it is a write off for me unless I can get a cheaper repair from somewhere.

MM.
