My Terrano 2.7 TD R3mR automatic seems very prone to rear wheel spin in the wet at the rear end particularly at lowish speeds of 15-20 mph when cornering particularly on roundabouts.

My last diesel car had traction control and independant rear suspension so maybe I am just being a bit heavy with the right foot for what is quite a torquey 2.7 four cylinder engine. Is it just that the Terrano is stone age rear axle technology or is it a fixable problem.

Rear tread depth and tyre pressures are as per the handbook.

Do the R3M have LSD's? when the oil needs changing in the T2's the back end goes twitchy. Plenty of threads regarding this so it might be worth having a look to see if it helps.

hi, i hat that troubly a while ago.

new tyres....

just start with the easy stuff.

now no trouble, even with my lead boots on!

hi, tail happy terranos been discussed very recently.

have you not had the pleasure of a rear wheel drive
vehicle before then? having learnt to drive in 80s in
a mk2 escort I love it, but only when on my own. If
family with me I use my own traction control, my
right foot and ease off...

as asaid a lot of it is down to torquey 2.7tdi, chunky
tyres and firmish rear suspension. personally not
convinced the lsd helps either way.

heheh i know just what you mean i had a cortina, that would wander all over the road in the wet or dry, and at only 15 mph. great car to learn how to get back in line with.

Thanks for your comments I am going to try a differential oil change first as it is a LSD unit.

My rear tyres are Avon the fronts are Enduro they are pretty good on tread depth so I am not inclined to ditch them until they are nearer the limit.

I have driven RWD, FWD and AWD over the last 43 years so its not as if I am not used to RWD but to be fair the last time I drove a solid rear axle RWD was when I had a 1961 Vauxhall Victor in 1966.

I would look at the quality of the tyres you have.

Try a tyre rotation left front to left back and same on the right side.
This will test the brands as you have different brands, and see what happens

back end happy terrano

I have changed the differential oil with new LSD oil and it does not seem to have made much if any difference but the old oil was fairly clean so that's no surprise really.

My new owners handbook has just arrived and this has thrown some light on a dashboard mounted switch with three positions 2wd,auto & lock.

Using the Auto position has illuminated the green 4-wheel plan on the dash display and this has greatly improved the wet weather performance and feel. Presumably this is because the R3mR has all mode 4x4. There is no tight corner braking effect so I shall use the Auto position when its raining in future.

As the fuel consumption is no doubt affected if I drive in Auto mode all the time I shall use this just for wet roads at sensible speeds.
