Much of a job ?

Does it seperate from transfer box or do u drop them both ?

Anyone got an under side picture ?

depends on the reason for removal, but a pig of a job unless you have a hoist and gearbox trolley. if it is to do a clutch then I have done many and taken the engine out which to my mind is far easier, Rick

Want to replace input shaft bearing as its noisey as fk on idle

Hopefully would have access to mates garage with hydraulic 2 post lift and transmission jack etc

OK then box out it is, I have done one, an auto on the ground with jacks/axle stands etc, never again, you do know you have to remove the front torsion bars, and to do the first motion shaft you have to strip the whole gearbox, Rick

Oh ffs :D

Are torsion bars a pain then ? Need to reindex mine really anyway

Was hoping I could pull bearing straight out from bell housing side with a special puller ...

Might just drive it till it dies and put a box in it

i have pics too rick if you want memories :thumb2

torsion bars are not too bad but means car is not on its front wheels so it become immovable, not sure if you can get bearing out from front as I think there is a large circlip holding it into the removable housing and this housing/first motion shaft cannot be removed as the gear will not clear the lay shaft gear, what makes you think it is the FM shaft bearing anyway? Rick

Ive taken about 10 boxes out all in field laying on my back with only trolley jack.Yes you need to remove crossmember with torsion bars but i find the most difficult thing is actually seperating the box from the engine. Not only are they masticked together but the bellhousing is very tight against the body so much so that it scrapes the paint on the way out

Thanks Pete I might get you to Email them to me as I lost mine due to drive/memory failure

didnt think you would want reminding mate , shame sally isnt with us anymore ..... was a great truck ...... can i cry now ?

Btw rick, it does this noise/rattle when on idle from box area, disappeares when clutch pressed

Mine rattles on idal slightly over filled box when changed oil it quiatened it down a bit
That was a few miles ago still going strong
All else fails turn rsdio up

My work motor has been ding that for two years and it whines in all but 4th and I do heavy towing, so I would not worry about it, Rick

Molyslip gear treatment works a treat too.
Do a molyslip search on this site will bring up many posts, some written by me.

Hope this helps,

best regards,

Rustic

sounds like thrust bearing will be a while yet before it fails :lol

Thrust bearing would be felt through pedal surely, especially if it was this noisey, its quite a heavy deep bearing noise also

Ok mate, I might just change the oil and overfill

Read on aus forums that they fill through the top ? I guess this would be accessible under gear lever sheath ?

Agreed they are tight but getting them out is easy, lifting and aligning to get it back in with out distorting the clutch centre plate is a very different story, Rick

Gearbox filler is on near side half way up.
I use a length of garden hose cable tied near to the fuel filter in the engine bay, with a funnel, warm the oil first. Hose slips down the side of the box, and you don't spill any.

on level ground fill till it starts to overflow the filler, then I jacked up the nearside, and put in a few hundred ml extra.

TIP that always appears here...
slacken the filler plug BEFORE removing the drain plug.
Otherwise you will be filling through the top of the gear box.
Now you know why they do it that way...
