Howdy y'all. Can anyone help me please,

I'm after two of these rubbers for a steering mod,

Or a website I can buy a much thicker one :nenau

This is my current one off of mine, the techs at my work want to do a more thorough steering column mod than the bolts n nut lengthen :thumb2

I do have a couple on my scrappers but reluctant to remove them for two reasons the first is I loose all steering so cannot move them about very well, the other is they are all more than ten years old and would not want to think that I had contributed to a possible failure in the future, for such an important part I would buy new from Nissan, but re your other thread on this I do have the safety bracket if you need one, and will be in Ealing on Tuesday, Rick

Ealing is a stones throw away from me, one bus journey.

If the graunching is caused by mechanical contact with any steering parts with the chassis or other body parts, then you could find a situation where the steering locks up, so check clearances.

Also, some people adjust the steering box in an attempt to remove some play out of the system, if done incorrectly, then at certain steering positions, can have increased friction... causing loss of steering range.

If the drive belt on the power steering is loose, or incorrectly adjusted, then this can cause some un smooth steering, similar to a judder when you turn the wheel, you can also get this effect, if you have washed the vehicle, and splashed water onto the belts etc. This usually clears after a minute or so.

However, if the belt is too tight, it can then cause premature wear on the steering pump.:doh

There is maintenance and there is poor maintenance, sometimes "fixing things" can make things worse, or introduce new faults.:augie

How many times have we heard on this forum..." I have this noise"... only to find out after a dozen posts, that it didn't happen before I ... did this or changed that...

eg white smoke... oh by the way, it was fine before I fitted a new fuel filter, or I have a serious oil leak... it was fine before I adjusted the tappets...:doh
my brakes won't bleed properly... oh forgot to say...changed front callipers, and fitted them on the wrong side so the bleed nipples were at the bottom...:doh
Yep we have heard them all.
My oil consumption has increased... oh did oil chance recently and used 5w30 oil...:doh

So a quick reminder to anyone posting a fault, please advise us what work was done prior to the discovery of your fault, as we have found in other posts, these can sometimes be related.

Yes very true rustic, after my incident I am all too aware and a bit frightened of anything happening to the steering. I got the missus to turn the steering slowly full lock left n full lock right whilst I inspected the column and the steering box. All we have done is extend the column with the rubber by 10/15mm ish.

I believe I am right in saying that the whole steering assembly does not move when going over bumps? By that I mean it is bolted to chassis and suspension has no bearing in this?

The noise I believe has only occurred since we adjusted the steering although I was not conscious before the problem.

Defo not a belt/wash issue, if you go down the road and steer well - left to right you can hear it. It's not major but it's there, again my description is not great but graunch/ metal groan noise, perhaps stress on extended bolts? :nenau

Not sure if this has already been answered, but generally, a search on Ebay of [ steering (coupler,coupling) ] seems to find a good variety. How you find out the dimensions though is another story.

Aha that seems to be the right wording :thumbs although only for a skyline it looks identical :lol

Alex, just as a suggestion, might it be worth measuring the length of the bar that runs from the coupler, down to the UJ, and comparing it to someone else's. Then, if it is shorter, you could just jet a new rod, rather than messing around making up a new coupler. Cost wise it would probably be cheaper as well as safer.
