Just looking for some advice, I think my head gasket has blown.

1) now there is no oil in the water, there is no water in the oil.

2) on tick over the car smokes like you wouldnt believe (blue smoke), this smoke decreases with extra rpm.

3) as the water pressure builds up, I can feel the hoses going rock hard.

4) as the hoses get hard with the water pressure the engine starts to run lumpy on tick over.

5) there are air bubbles being pumped into the header tank via the radiator bleed hose at the top by the cap.

can anyone confirm what i have diagnosed as i am getting conflicting diagnoses from apparently qualified people

Ive got one with headgasket gone if you take the rad cap off it runs ok if you but your hand on it get big build up of pressure and the engine starts to run rough remove your hand and it runs fine again.

Are you sure you haven't bought a Toyota Surf????????
They all do that!!!
Yes your head / head gasket has gone !!!!
The head may have gone porus pressurising the system!!
The head gasket may have failed between a cylinder and the water jacket pressurising the system!!!
I had a Surf , sold it, bought a nissan ....... no problems!! Simples!!!

Take the thermostate out & see if that does it ?

Yes your head gasket has gone, thankfully it is a cast iron head, so you will probably get away with just a gasket, if it was an ali head it would need skimming and would fail bad in a few tens of miles, yours will go for several hundred before it becomes undrivable, but the sooner it is done the better, Swifty is good on gaskets, we are near Hastings, Rick

I feel guilty :( & shocked

Head Gasket it is :(

How much of the engine has to be removed & what is the cost in parts

To be removed, inlet manifold, exhaust manifold & turbo, top alternator bracket, power steering pump, injector pipes (you may get away with top only) all wiring connectors and hoses, rocker cover, rocker shaft and push rods (keep in order) drain water from block drain point under turbo (if not you will fill the bores with water) remove (progresivly) the head bolts (they are tight around 125 ft lbs) lift head off, it is heavy you will need to get your body above it and swing it onto the front body member covered in thick towels, unless you are super man then you just lift it with your little finger, expect to see cracking between exhaust valve area and injector insert, gasket, standard service replacement 3 notch, your gasket may be 1 2 or 3, you can use a 3 notch on any motor but if yours was originally a 3 notch and you fit a 1 notch, then piston contact with the head is on the cards, cost between £30 & £70 depending on where you go, the whole job can be done in a good day, Rick

Yes definately HG failure.

Only thing I would say is buy the GENUINE nissan gasket, (they are now twice superseeded) and make sure you torque down the head, exactly to the letter after properly cleaning the bolts and threads.

Bolts must be installed with only the faintest drop of light machine oil on the threads and under the cap, NOT dry.

Cheers chaps :thumbs

It need not be that bad, get it down to Swifty, £120.00 plus the gasket, no problems, Rick

sounds almost like mine did
i can vouch for rick and swifty's work mine is doing fine and hasnt missed a beat since

head is heavy and also a pain to get it back on level

if you are doing it yourself i would say take the bonnet off to give additional room
