Used to play league chess against other schools when I was in secondary school, pretty good player as well I was

Can you play online?

Loads of online chess games.
Taught my lad how to play on a real board with real pieces:eek:
I used to play for derbyshire under 18's many moons ago.

I used to play, what annoys me most is having the board the wrong way around, and the queen on the wrong coloured square.
When I have taught people to play chess, I tell them...
White on the right, and the Queen stands on her own coloured square. Simples.
I have also played lightning chess against the clock at county level, when I was at school.

Most chess players at high level, use standard openings, and respond with the same defence.... boring... boring... boring...
I just played what I thought, and it blew away the opponants, as they couldn't see what I was going to do, but I could plan my moves many moves in front, and that's why I was sucessfull. At one inter school match, I beat one player, that later I found was the Cheshire under 18's champion... No wonder he was...upset lol.
What do I now think of chess? still a bit boring to be fair...

It is if it's taken too seriously.
Can't really remember if I was that good it was just something that came easy to me:lol

I never took to it and as a teenager beer and women and then more beer took priority:lol

You weren't making the most for your time then :augie

Alcohol is a mugs game, expensive, fattening, bad stomach's, bad headaches, and very fattening.

I prefer to smoke and make no attempts to hide it, I smoke to relax, I smoke to get focused, just smoke different strains for the situation

Chess - used to love it !

I was a pretty good chess player up until I was 11 years of age as we played at school. We studied various opening gambits and learnt how to "Castle" properly, "En passant" and other moves.
We played matches against other schools and I was good for my age beating lads that were a few years older than me.

When I moved to Secondary Modern it was just not played as it was seen as an elitist upper class thing.

I remember beating my Dad when I was about 9 and he would not play against me after that.
Trouble is I never got any better as I became more interested in Girls and Motor Cycling !
