Pull the lever back for 4 High, don't push down.

Now push down and pull back, 1st place is neutral, then pull back more for 4 low.
Hope this helps.

Should be exactly as Rustic and makeitfit say.....might be a tad sticky if not used in a long time (highly likely) so persevere...mine sometimes needs a good yank to get it back...

1. Must be in neutral.
2. Pull back once (without any other directional pressure) for 4H
3. Once in 4H position, to select 4L press down on top of the gearknob and, while pressing down firmly, pull it back about the same distance again and it should engage.
4. To disengage, simply select neutral and push forward once til it pops up for the 4H position and then once again until its fully forward (in 2WD)

Like I say, once you get it to that final position when selecting 4L, it might want a bit of a further yank to engage but that should be it.

If you still can't get it, let us know exactly where its sticking, i.e. are you able to depress the knob in the 4H position etc..? If you can at least depress the knob just give it a good old tug.......

and no knob jokes u lot!:doh

Hmmm thats a bitch, didn't realise you had an older truck already.

I do maintain that the facelifts are not as well built as the MkIIs TBH. I've got two and they've consistently been more of a PITA than my old MkII that Colin now has with close to 190k on the clock.

Not that it helps you of course! Not sure what the next step is as I don't know just how much you can force that gearstick...maybe Rick or someone knows an alternative way to apply pressure to the selector mechanism without breaking anything?

Wonder of its worth changing the oil oin the front diff as well?

I take it you've tried this in all states, e.g. engine hot/cold etc..?

BTW, I take it you know you've got fixed hubs on the MkIII/IV so you can engage 4H on the fly at any speed, and don't need to reverse to disengage (although it does sometimes take a while for 4WD to disengage if you are cruising on the straight and level with no gear/speed changes).

Hi . yep tried all but a big hammer.may take top of box off see if selector shaft is seized or bent.

But as you say, percussive engineering should be like Skegness really. A last resort. :lol:lol:lol

You can see the mechanism from underneath, have a look with a torch while someone is moving the lever, it might need some WD 40, or you might see the gaiter for the lever has broken and jamming the mechanism.

Don't use a hammer YET !!!!!!!!!
