Another boring one about overheating

Just come back from the south coast via M20 and Wrotham Hill with Mistral 2.7 and towing a caravan of 1500kg plus all the gear.
Checked water and oil before I left, and both fine. Got to the top of Wrotham Hill with gauge nearly into the red. Stopped to check, and the water in the resevoir bottle was bubbling hot. Let it cool down a bit,and managed to get home ok. Had to top up with a full two litres of water. There was no sign of a water leak, although I know a small leak could evaporate before seen. I would expect my old truck to get a bit hot and bothered towing a heavy van up a long uphill gradient, but to lose two litres of water as well..I'm a little concerned.
Anybody suffered the same symptoms?
Any advice would be good.

check viscous fan is working , it should start when you start the engine and then shut off ...also check for bubbles in your header tank

possibly the water pump.i had small leak on mine for ages that i couldn't find then one day it just went big time.

Check security of the hose clips, the hoses deform with age and they need a nip now and again.

However, if you have antifreeze in, you should be able to smell it or see crystals around the leak.

From the overheating issue you may need to back flush the radiator, check thermostat, or debris covering the radiator.

Gunner change the stat, flush the radiator, check the pump's not leaking, and take it from there. I have noticed that the fan has cracks on the boss between the blades. I think that will have to be replaced.

its def this. wont be the plastic fan itself it will be the viscous bit thats not working . mine is the same , lots are but never tow so dont notice.

are they fixable/servicable timbo ???

Also get the fan changed if it's cracking too. Check out the quick links for the workshops on changing stat and water pump. I think the viscus is part of water pump. When you get the stat get a 82 degree version not the 88 if your having problems like that.

when i owned my mistral it was a common fault started with Rossco in NZ and in a month there must have been half a dozen or more water pump went leaking.
it was quite a forum at the time.

Rossco did do a download on how to change it but if i remember right when i had mine done it didnt need everything took off that Rossco did.

Again from memory there is two sizes available and you have to be careful to get the right one.
