Over the last week, my T2 developed a really annoying rattle towards the rear of the drivers side, somewhere about the rear seats area. It sounded like it was coming from behind the plastic panelling, and was there when the car was cold and idling.

The problem was, once warm, it stopped, and the first job of the day is to take my wife to the train station, so by the time I get the car back home, it would not do it again, until I was just about ready to go and pick her back up.

Then a couple of days ago, I noticed that when I shut the door as I got out, there was a new rattle from the drivers side step. Kicked the step, and sure enough, a clangy rattle.

I hate rattles!!!

So today, I thought I would at least cure the side step one, and discovered that the channel the square headed bolts sits in, under the aluminium tread plate had worn away, and the bolt was no longer holding it in place. A bit of modification, and now it is all back together, sans rattle... Best bit, the rattle at the back inside the car seems to have gone as well. I take it the noise was transferring up the chassis and into the car, so I killed two rattles with 1 screw... should be a proverb in there somewhere:lol

Yay, a happy ending!.....for now anyway muhahaha,....ahem......sorry:augie

I had a rattle from the rear nearside, I tracked it down to the area around the jack storage area, I removed the jack, spare fan belt, and it still did it.

I put my hand into a dark area... Not knowing what I'd find...

Felt around, and the controller / beeper for the trailer socket had parted company with the double sided tape, and was rattling around.

Only lasted 17 years...

Anyway, I hope I still have the Mav next time it falls off, in another 17 years.:naughty.

I too hate rattles.
In the Picasso, if someone has used the rear seats, the seat belt clip rests against the rear doors, I really have to stop as it drives me around the bend.

I guess I could put a small pad on the door to stop it:doh

I had an Impreza sport estate a few years ago, and it must have been made on a Friday afternoon, bloody awful car...

The rear seat belts sat against the "C" pillar and were designed to rattle. I got some dark blue kids socks, and put them over the clip, which matched the car interior, and did not look too out of place, especially as most of the time, it had the rear seats out. Luckily, it went before an MOT, as I know I would have forgot them, and had the MOT man fail it...

The worst though, were the rattles and creaks from the trim. In cold weather all the plastic trim contracted and rattled, in the summer, it all expanded and creaked. I spent the summer spraying silicon every where, and in the winter stuffing bits of tissue down all the gaps. Along with all the other mechanical problems, I was so glad to see the back of that car... Shame though, as boy did it shift...

A family friend always had the Volkswagon Vans, and he says after so many years of driving them, he is totally immune to squeaks, rattles and bangs, I so wish I could be like him.
