Hey again all
having a hard time sorting a problem with the 94 ..2.4 mav,and its getting to the big hammer stage..Sorted a load of jobs on it that should have been done before winter, any how one of the jobs was a new dizzy cap i know i should have got cap, rotor, and leads in a oner but i took cap off to check it and it split..phoned round and managed to source the cap only, same cap, fitted and sorted, went to work about 10 miles np at all,on way home i noticed just in first and second it was missing..real bad(sometimes)took cap off checked it all good, went and got new leads and rotor arm thinking this was the problem, fitted all inc a new set of plugs...still missing in first and second sometimes..ie 50/50..once i hit 3/4/5 its runs nice, can hammer it upto 70mph np at all, come to a junction and try to set off and it misses again real bad,i dont mean one pot down i mean total loss for a micro second, sometimes if i floor it it gets through it and away i go.
just gone out to it this morning and it starts first turn, but as i press pedal it is missing and banging again real bad,can a new dizzy cap be faulty, its the basic one with 4+coil,or am i looking in wrong place,it just seems odd that it all started with just the dizzy cap,it was running fine right up until i changed the dizzy, the other jobs i have done couldnt cause it as i only changed clutch master, rear shoes and cylinders, and front pads, not touched anything else.
Any and all ideas will be very helpfull cause im getting real pee,d off with it now..

have you checked/changed fuel filter?checked/cleaned the maf sensor?
had some running probs with mine last year.
i changed plugs
leads
dizzy
rotor arm
fuel filter
still no joy.it turned out to be a stuck egr valve and a crack in manifold.
took egr valve off and soaked it in wd 40 and gave it a good poke and clean and its been o.k so far.
had the crack in manifold welded up and thats still o.k
took me about 3 weeks to root out the problem.
also check earth from engine to body as mine had corroded.not sure if this was adding to my problems but i changed it anyway.
a case of trial and error until i got it sorted.

Mav

il look at the egr valve,if im right its just under the clutch master and to right, tried to go out in it this morning and see how it was but it apears to have got worse, its missing in 1/2 and then its ok in 3/4/5 until i hit higher revs, then i lose it again,if i floor it ....nothing,just goes dead..
ive got a fuel filter on order so il swop that as soon as it lands, again just seems wierd that the as soon as i changed the dizzy my probs started..

someone had running probs on a petrol one recently turned out to be dodgy ignition key switch .

this fix was known as
the lurrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrveglove fix

ill find the thread later if i get computer time

if not im sure paul or zippy will find it:thumbs

hi..had the same on a old golf gti i had..it turned out to be a slight crack in the dizzy cap!!! took me ages to find the fault... you tryed putting the old dizzy cap back on?? other than that would not know:( as we all know cars have a mind of their own!

stupid question here but you have checked the ignition timing havnt you?
did you replace just the cap or the dizzy? your post isnt clear on that point

I havent checked the timing,i changed the lot, dizzy, rotor and leads..but if its the timing how come now and again it runs fine..surely it would be running crap constantly if the timing had thrown..

Do these have a ballast resistor on them??

If so might pay to check they are usually wired on to the side of the dizzy if my memory serves me right

Sorry didnt read right..i have only changed the dizzy cap not the whole dizzy..and na its the basic one, doesnt come with anything on it,going to pull it off and check its not cracked in a while, thats why it seems strange after only changing the cap it goes horribly wrong..i think il order another cap just to be sure..Doing the fuel filter this afternoon as well..was reading about this egr valve..is it true u can take pipe off and block it to test for faults ? not looked to see how nasty it is to remove yet...
I may go down the lines of a mobile tune guy if all that fails just to check all the timing and stuff.
Thx for the answers so far,its giving me stuff to check instead of waving my fists at it through the window..:nenau

A quick check on the ignition HT side of things (though it looks like you've done everything you can), is to fire it up IN THE DARK - then lift the bonnet. If you have a problem with the leads or plug caps, you'll see the sparks.

Sorted and thx for all the replys, got stuffed of with it so orderd the mobile guy out..F*****g thing came straight back with mafs...absolutely nothing to do with anything i had touched, just so happend a wire had decided to snap at mafs plug around the same time as i changed the dizzy cap,and the snapped wire was not in view, solderd up and runs better than ever(For now)
thx again all...
