Whilst replacing steering lock stops I wondered if there were ever some rubber stops in this part of the wheel/suspension assembly (behind front anti-rollbar)? I seem to remember seeing a post here somewhere where someone removed some kind of stop in this location whilst replacing some gators.

yep they are missing.
the one in the fist pic should be bonded onto the bit of plate that's on the lower wishbone, the upper one pushes through that part of the chassis on the second pic.

Yep. Stops missing, I just replaced the missing ones on my T2. I got these, quick delivery, paid with Paypal.

You might get lucky finding something similar at your local motor factors; I did not have the time to go searching around.

Is there any reason that they would be removed other than making space and they forgot to put them back?

I doubt it, what happens is the rubber becomes unstuck from the metal plate, maybe due to tin worm under the rubber, and the rubber just drops off.
If you catch them early, you can glue them back before they fall off.

What sort of glue should be used and would the metal surfaces need to rubbed back to bare metal?

On my T2 the description from rustic fits exactly. In fact, they must have gone a long time ago since the metal plates were completed crusted up with rust.

For gluing, you would indeed need to have bare metal, without dust and well degreased. No idea for glue, something properly strong I'd imagine.

Since I do not do any off-roading and that I haven't heard or felt any loud thumps am I correct in thinking that the missing stops aren't much of a problem unless MOT thinks so?

that is about right, front .lower rubbers if hitting a pot hole might make the tyre hit the inner wing on the up bound, rears are really spring helpers, if you rarely go fully loaded and do not tow then again not really a problem, I tow heavy and could not do so safely with the rears missing, Rick

Mmm I'd better check the rear as I tow a fair bit!

Rears are missing and I tow but have not noticed anything untoward.

It failed its MOT on a worn drop link but no mention of the missing stops.

Depends on what you tow, I am at max with my outfit and the rear goes down too far without them, it is not just the towing my motor only seats two as the rest is full of kit, Rick

Tigerseal, look on ebay for it.:thumb2

I used Tiger Seal on my r3mR rear bump stops that were inside the rear coil springs luckily they are quite big and the rubber was kept in place by the spring.

To replace them would have been a big job. I managed to unscrew the backing plate, remove it, clean it with wire brush, screw it back in, apply Tiger Seal and wedged rubber in place overnight using some polystyrene until sealant was dry.

It lasted over 5 years until I sold it.
