Hi folks,

My Maverick is up on a lift in a French garage after I used it to come to Burgundy with some bulky goods.

It was slipping out of 5th when decelerating off the Autoroutes and then became really difficult to engage any other gear - certainly couldn't come down through the gears.

Eventually the only way I could engage any gear was by being static (not ideal on autoroutes and spur roads).

Just got it to it destination and to the garage who were being unreasonably helpful for a French one, considering I'd had problems with a Citroen BX when they didn't want to know.

As far as I can understand it, the locking devices to create an all wheel drive scenario is damaged - even had one kind of channel part (one of 4) missing (whether the cause of the problem or not I'm not sure).

Two alternatives have been mooted: one to have a 'new' box (£3-4k allegedly) or he can throw away the multiple plates that go to lock the drive and simply use a washer-bearing-type thing-he showed me from exploded diagrams he'd downloaded from Nissan showing the all-wheel drive and standard non 4 wheel drive components.

Obviously I've elected for the latter and fortunately I was never bargaining for much use of any 4 wheel drive capability the vehicle has anyway - I just wanted its low down grunt to trailer pull.

Really the only thing I want to know is how this is likely to have come about given that for me its only the vehicle's second long run and its mileage is a genuine 67k miles. Did I have something badly selected on its 4 wheel drive lever without knowing it? We did do anywhere from 60-80 mph on the autoroutes where possible.

Just trying to get a handle on what's happened. No criticism of the garage, whose initial diagnosis, about which I was not convinced when they described it, was clutch burn out.

Thanks for all thoughts.

Are they talking about the brake rings inside the auto locking hubs in the centre of the front wheels? Broken rings can be removed and then do a,proper repair at home and wont cost too much to repair. I'd be more worried about it jumping out of 5th gear and then not being able to select a gear at all.
Do you have recovery cover and get it brought home?

OOPH I think you've put it in 4wd on the tarmac :doh
That's not good and you've either trashed your auto hubs hopefully, or the transfer box
Don't do it again and it'll be fine. 4x4 is only for offroad or loose conditions. Read the sun visoor for oppo instructions :thumbs
Could be clutch pipeflexi or damper pipe . did the clutch peddle feel different ?

If as I suspect, you selected 4 wheel high, and drove many miles on tarmac at high speed then you have done damage, as makeitfit says hopefully only the front auto hubs, as jim's terrano says you can remove the brake ring and light spring and they will be fine, except if they are in the locked position, without the brake ring they will not unlock, to test this you should be able to turn the female splined inner part with the main part stationary, if both are in this condition then just re fit them and as long as no other damage has been sustained, be on your way, if however one or both hubs are locked then it is possible to tease the cams round to set them in free wheel, I have done it many times but some times it proves impossible, you then have to remove the multicoil circlip and remove the whole lump from the casing, then fit the casing to the car just to keep out dust and dirt, in both cases above remember not to go off road you only have rear wheel drive, all you need on tarmac anyway, Rick

Ouchie, sounds like another one meets the Tarmac :(

By the sounds of it it survived bloody well though!

Sound like your in for a bit of a time with the truck, things can get very expensive here in France, but don't take the first price they give you tell them it's too expensive and they will find a cheaper way to fix it. But generally they don't bodge things here, but spurious parts are hard to come by and genuine Nissan parts are twice the price of the UK.:doh

Get a trailer, find one breaking here and make a trip if it :thumb2

We have a few breakers on here :clap
