Alarm system - not automotive

Trying to find out what the name of these wired alarms systems that you see in Currys etc.. where they loop wires through loads of electrical items and need to unplug (and sound alarm in the process) to access items?

Its just we're at the NEC in a couple of weeks with twenty grands worth of bridal jewellery on open display and I don't trust any bastard.........but til I know what they're called I can't Google the perishing things

If I use that shed alarm gizmo (since I don't want to go mad til we know we are doing this kind of stuff regularly) I take it the two wires coming out of the control unit would basically sound an alarm if they are shorted, i.e. I just cut off the two sensors, extend the wire as required and fit a lug and socket?

The "Retail" solutions tend to be a bit overpriced for what they are!
So, yes, one of the shed alarm types would work for you. You just need to check that it has CC (closed circuit) loop operation, so if you cut the alarm wires it goes orf.
That is how most alarms are configured, but do check with the "experts" in the shop!

Most of the guys at my local Maplins, both Southend & Westcliff know their products, if they are not sure they call for assistance.

I like Maplins, used the Bristol Cribbs Causeway one a few times.

My only worry on this now is that logic tells me the shed jobbie is likely to work on a 'short circuit' basis rather than 'open circuit', otherwise it would be drawing power all the time. I'll have to bodge a workaround somehow because for £15, as Ray says, it beats commercial systems LOL.

knock one up out of a change over relay, buzzer, battery, length of wire.

Relay holds the power off until the loop is broken

Thanks for the kind offers but the Maplins help line got back to me today - really helpful - turns out this alarm works when it goes open-circuit, so I can replace the two sensors with a long length of cable with a simple plug and socket to allow items to be removed.

All for £15!

Sounds good but be aware of teams, while one innocent looking member "accidentally" pulls a plug, and while you are attending another member cuts the wire elsewhere while alarm still ringing nicks whatever and then disappears in an instant, Rick
