Since fitting my new K&n and cleaning my I/C, the Mav seems to whistle now when accelerating, if it did it before, it was very quiet. Is this normal? Also, and I don't have a point if comparison, how can I tell I have full power from the engine? It still goes, and the turbo seems to work, but it feels like you're not getting everything it's got to give, what can I check? I DO have EGR, and I haven't done anything with it, yet.

Cheers!

yep thats normal with a K&N filter the whistle is the turbo spinning up..

If you are losing power after putting the K&N filter just double check to see if you have the correct filter.
I had one but the wrong number for the model, replaced it with the correct one big difference

cheers rossco, i'll double check as you suggest BUT if anything, i have MORE power than before. let me try to explain my problem. This is my second 4x4, and i havent really grown up with them. My First 4x4 was a Fourtrak, with approx 90Bhp, it had an intercooler a very similar setup to the mav. I wouldnt say the fourtrak had more power though. My other car, is a Petrol MX6, this is a v6 engine with TONS of poke, so this is what I mean by limited comparison, I just dont know what to expect power wise. The reason why I posted this querie was because my other half went out in it yesterday, and she said she felt it didnt quite have the power (but like me, she has no point of comparison apart from the Fourtrak).

the car (now, after my extensive repairs) starts and drives fine, with what sounds like a very healthy engine and whistle!I can put my put down and rev it right up, it shifts, but feels like its not quite giving all its got. It doesnt "hold back", or judder or anything like that and I dont think theres much if any smoke out the back when booting it.

I might ask Jim-Terrano to have a go in it, see if he feels the same?? I do plan to do the EGR this weekend, and I also plan, while I am at it, to put some 10k boost through it to de-coke the engine...

What I am expecting from the car, is a significant boost when i put the foot down, but I am not sure if I am expecting too much!

Its true to say Clivvy that, even with a Tunit or Powerbox (which is giving you maybe 20bhp extra), the extra power is ' very noticeable' but not what I'd call 'hugely significant'. With a K&N induction kit, its detectable, but definitely not significant (its giving you 3-4hp tops)....just runs a bit smoother and a bit less breathlessly.

But with the K&N you should see at least a 2-3mpg mprovement in fuel consumption.....

Remember its a VERY HEAVY piece of ironmongery with a fundamentally underfuelled engine so its never going to set the world on fire.

might be worth disconnecting battery 24 hours or as long as possible reset ecu,
so it recognises free flowing filter etc.

you will have to make sure car is fully unlocked first then if need be lock it
manually/by the key/lock.

Dont know about fitting K&N filters on 4x4's but i fitted one to my BMW 320d and the oil in the filter caused the egr valve to get bunged up with oil.
I've always stuck to original filters since.

Pat thats an urban myth mate. The EGR is recirculating exhaust gases, not getting air directly from the inlet. You would need to drown a K&N in a couple of pints of oil for a fortnight to stand even the remotest chance of getting oil through into the engine, and even then it would gunk up the MAF wire before it did anything else. But the reality is all the K&N gets is a fine spray of oil ON THE OUTSIDE that wouldn't amount to quarter of a teaspoon.

Its a popularly circulated but completely unfounded load of twaddle - no offence intended :thumb2:thumb2:thumb2 ....K&N (and Pipercross etc.., all similar) have not only been sold in their millions, but are widely used in motorsport as well.

Hey Clivvy, no probs mate if you want to get together to compare motors. Now that I changed my Crankshaft Sensor it's like a rocket again, just as much smoke as NASA's best :lol You got my number Clivvy just give me a call sometime.

Jim
