Air Compressor and Tools

HI Guys,

right, you lot are very knowledgable, and I am not, so I was hoping I could run something by you!

ok, let me try to explain what I need, and why. I aint the worlds strongest man, but I do like to hav ea go, especially with the cars. the problem I have is most mechanics tighten up my cars wheel nuts, or other bolts etc too tight for me to loosen. As an example, I need to get my Mazda's wheels off, but I cant because they are tightened using an air wrench, not by hand, I need to paint my calipers and change the rear discs.

I was thinking, because of the muliple applications, I might buy an Air Compressor and tool set. Now budget is important, but I do understand they arent cheap. I need to make sure I get the right compressor for me, the uses I need it for are:

automotive-removal of wheel nuts, engine parts etc
paint spraying
nail gun
air blower

so with things liek paint spraying in mind, needs to be one that can run for a long time, can anyone point me in the right direction? Also, can you use any air tools with any compressor?

Hi clivvy the problem you are up against is that although you can get away with a budget air compressor for most tools the paint spraying part needs a high output and a normal compressor wont handle it as it would constantly be trying to charge air and wouldnt be able to feed enough to the gun. are you going for complete resrays or just repairs?

My dads got a small 1 dat cost him about £200 from machine mart...
Air tools it handles ok but spraying i wouldnt like to do much more than small pannel areas or wheel refurbishment which i'm snowed under with at the moment... :thumbs

AHHh right i see. the paint spraying isnt as important, I was thinking ahead for when i build my shed :thumbs, i can live without the sprayer!!

I bought a compressor and tools from ALDI a few years ago, served me OK.

They are on offer again as from today, pretty much the same as i bought.

Does the tools etc and it will spray but you will need to do a panel at a time which may not give you the best results.

However if u need a full respray then the one off cost of a decent compressor would be about the same as a decent respray.

Machine mart are good but also see if you have a local Pirtek or check tyhe local halford as they sometimes have a dispaly model for sale.

Thanks Paulp and Nedkelly, the aldi ones lokos ok, certainly for £80! if it will undo a tight wheel nut, then thats all i need, might see if i can afford it.....:thumbs

Ive never owned any air tools from the aldi selection but I have used them. I have had quite a bit of stuff from their other ranges. I.d say theyre average to good quality but excellent value for money:thumb2

i must admit i have never been let down with any aldi stuff....i think for the money they are excellent value and are not what i would call budget by any means tho obviously not snap on but hey for the diy-er you cant really go far wrong. great thread:thumbs

i've used air tools for many years now, for what you need, a 14-15 cfm pump with at least a 50lt tank, now this not suitable for doing full resprays day in day out, but it will paint a car if you use a low pressure spray gun, as for air tools this will run anything you will ever use.

i have painted plenty of car panels with my outfit and i get a decent finish, colin extreme has seen some of my repairs etc, i bought my compressor from halfords about 4yrs ago, ex display for £275.

as for your wheel nuts, the tyre guys will use about 150 psi and large 150-200lt tank, i use a 24"sway bar to loosen before using air wrench. :thumbs

right, I understand. SO, with regards the wheel nuts, I assume the reverse when refitting, air wrench first, then use my 24" power bar to nip up a 1/4 turn or something??

I think I am going to get one, probably the compressor from Aldi, just need to double check the spec based on what you say Terry, then I need to buy a tool set THEN I am going to take my Mazda wheels off and paint the calipers.:thumbs

Just start them by hand,gun them up,then use a torque wrench at about 112Nm i think or there abouts Cant stand people & or garages that just gun em up & over tighten & don't use copper ease

hi if you are wanting to run air tools from a compressor you need at least 14 cfm output mainly to run any knd of air tools good hunting. i got a cheap one from netto a couple of years ago wi 24 litre tank brill for blowing up tyres don't forget to look at machine mart and desent size air tank aswell:thumbs

i agree with adz, use a torque wrench to sure, the compressor in aldi's will be ok for very light work, air wrench will drain air faster than it can pump, and it's not for spraying cars, maybe fences, washing engine bays, pumping up tyres etc. :thumb2

Last time they air gunned they they got a bill for the new wheel studs that were crossed threaded

You could always send the misses in and when they bring out the air gun she could say ohh will that make your nuts to tight
