Can anyone help me with this one please.

Were abouts would the advance & retard sensor be found?,

It is on a 51 plate Terrano diesel & can it be replaced too.

Mav.

Does it have one of them being a Diesel? I could be wrong but I thought they were only on Petrol engines to adjust when the spark occurs or am I barking up the wrong tree.

Thanks for the reply Jim, I am not sure,

It was just a question i was asked,

Was it done by turning the distributor on a petrol engine?.

Mav.

Yeah that sounds about right Mick, on older engines anyway.

PS Think we'll wait for Guru Toolbox

In brief, the advance and retard on the 2.7tdi is controlled by the ecu, this takes readings from the engine position / speed sensor, water temp sensor etc etc and then alters the timing via an electrical solenoid within the injection pump, switching it on and off rapidly (pulsing) to achieve the correct injection point for the running conditions.

Thanks Toolbox,

You really are a top man.

Thanks,

Mav.

I thought that it was found in the front passenger seat next to the dip stick in the drivers seat..

Well in some vehicles anyway.....

Sorry could not resist that....

Hello again.

The bloke has been to a diesel specalist who reckons that its
something to do with the advance & retard, but hes also been told that the problem is with the sensor on No 1 injector which can throw up the same fault, the engine runs great and tows his caravan as normal, its just that the emu light is lit but in fact sometime goes off when it wants, has anyone come across this before,

its a bit of a poser!!!
