Well could not get an internet connection in my Office attached to our Garage at the bottom of the garden. As I have been decorating in the room where the router is I thought I would check the connections. Its a hard wired connection to the garage that I put in myself before Wi-fi was common.

Ran trouble shooter on the PC then changed both cables from router to junction box and from junction box to PC. No joy then wondered if my neighbour had cut through the cable when cutting our hedge but the hard wired cable is in a pretty hefty trunking and it looked OK.

Just about given up when I spotted that the cable where about 6" is visible as it exits our conservatory was all chewed up. Our little Chihuahua had guilt written all over her as she shot outside when she saw me looking at the damage.

So will now need to replace a run of around 30 yards of 6 core cable and connect to sockets !

Buy a pair of powerline adapters and forget about long cables. Cable from router into first adapter plugged in to the mains. Then second adapter in your office plugged into the mains far easier.

I've used them in large buildings that needed access to out buildings and they work great. Generally speaking they'll work on the same consumer unit so you can have an upstairs, downstairs and garage ring mains and they'll work just fine. I personally had a office in the back of my garage, worked perfect for that. Only time I've ever had a problem is plugging them in to extension cables like 4 gangs which for some reason seemed to upset mine.

You can get a pair of basic ones for approx £25.

I have some Powerline Adaptors and they work fine on the house ring main but as its a long run of armoured cable supplying the Garage and the feed is from the none RCB part of the split load Consumer unit it will not work in my Garage which is a shame. I tried ages ago running back and forth pressing the buttons but no joy. Mine are quite old bought them on flea bay about 8 years ago. I guess there must be a range/continuity limit as they refuse to work using any adaptors as others here have commented.

At present fitting an extra junction box and just replacing the section in the Conservatory and will box in the weak spot ! Taken zippy656 's tip.

P.S. My Garage has its own consumer unit with RCB & Trip fuses so this might be the reason.

Yep that's what I am going to do I have the tool for connecting the female sockets but not the male side so will get a pre-connected length and a connector joint.

Not sure if you can DIY the male ends might be useful tool if you can.

Is there any way of tapping into the garage supply before it leaves the house and stick a single 13amp socket into it. You'd get your network connectivity then surely.

Powerline range limitations.

Can't remember where I found the information but they will work in a block of flats if they share the supply from landlords meter ( such as an old Victorian House split into flats) but will not work in purpose built flats so next door can't get free access.

You can even get issues if a house has separate ring mains upstairs and downstairs wired on a different fused outlet. A spurred extension can also give problems like a 6 way extension but I have found this depends on the quality of the extension lead and often the one nearest the supply cable works fine but the adjacent one will not!

No doubt the electrical members here can explain why this is !

You could just use a purpose made punchdown joint unit such as this:

If it's outside, then put the whole thing in a 100mm IP65 weatherproof box.

Ethernet connection fixed !

Well my replacement section of Ethernet cable and connectors arrived yesterday so canine damage now repaired !
