I knew it needed doing and finally got the grinder out:thumb2
I've had to do this 3 times now, once on each of my Trolls so this time I just waded in with the grinder:thumb2
New steel is 1.6mm stainless so should be good till the rest of it rots:augie
It only need doing for the mot as it is joined to the body mount, but I need it to be water tight, with the usual drainage of course.
Just got the backside of the rear arch to do on this quarter then the other side.
Usual Troll issue as the plastic arch leaves a bit of tin unprotected and the first you see is when 2" of wing has been eaten by the tin worms. Then it starts at the bottom of the rear sill and voila:nenau

big mice but stainless and mild steel do not weld.

Yes they do...

You will get weld dilution and reduced levels of chromium in the weld if using St St electrode, or just a mild steel joint if using a normal electrode.

Once it is primed covered in body filler and paint it don't matter any way, but if the paint does get chipped by stones it stands a better chance that mild steel.

Plus I've got lost of sheets and strips of stainless to use up:thumb2

can vouch for that, first stainless to mild steel I did was roof hand rail on a narrow boat, used dissimilar rods, since then with MIG welded stainless to cills no problem using mild steel wire, have stainless wire but no point, Rick

also found I can braze stainless with ready fluxed brass rod no problem, previously could only do it with moist flux applied first, this is with gas flame, Rick

I have used an arc torch to braze, pair of carbon rods in a holder, I dont have gas

i humbly stand corrected then.
That's what makes this site a great site, we have enough experience and knowledge, and we are not afraid to pass it on, and also learn from it.:thumb2

If it has a wire, many of us like me, can make a great contribution.
If it's metal, again, there are many ways to fold it, cut it, join it paint it, even scrap it lol

If it has nuts and bolts, there are many short cuts we can take to remove parts and re-assemble.
If it has a programme, ECU, computer etc, there are again members who can pass on their valuable knowledge.
This also applies to all our hobbies too, camping, boating, off roading, radio, etc

Yep a great site for sure.:thumb2
