Have a chance of a 97 Maverick 2.7TDi for €500. Worth a punt or is it too expensive a fix?

Whats 500 squiggles in old money? :nenau
I've used some stuff called "Steel Seal" that fixes head gaskets without undoing the head, bloody brilliant :sly

I guess if it's squeaky clean and has a full mot and low miles it could be worth a shot. How long does it take to do the head and how much to skim it etc?
Elty has an engine for a few squiggles I think.
PS 450 is the sort of money you get for mot failures that do drive but get sold to Poland.

depends whats caused it.....it might need nothing more than a skim and a new gasket, but if its burnt valves/seats as well then its a bit more money....but if you are good with spanners it didn't ought to be too bad.

be interesting to now why it went though, don't think we've had many diesels go like that, if any...what mileage is it Liam?

Haven't checked to see what mileage,Paul, but the body looks ok from picture. I suspect the water pump or possibly a fan belt. Bloke says it's a very clean motor but the downside is it's a long way from my place.:( He wasn;t really chatty on the phone so hard to say if it's worth travelling to have a look. Might just sit tight and see if he lowers the asking price.

Liam, saw a 00 T2 LWB commercial with about 80,000miles with head gasket gone about 6 months ago at a salvage place. Guy was asking E 1,800. At that price I wasn't even mildly interested. Think I know where that one ended up though, think it was broken for parts and not repaired. It would seem that prices here are a bit higher than in the UK though so you might be looking at paying a bit more than what would be considered reasonable across the water. If the one you are looking at is anywhere near me I could take try and take a look at it if it's of any help.

Thanks Daniel,it's closer to me than it is to you but still too far for a gamble. Might just keep an eye on it and see if the price comes down. With the head gone it would need to be put on a transporter and that would add to the price quite a bit. If I thought Steel Seal would work and it could be driven I'd definitely have it but no way of knowing for sure.

No problem. Hope it works out.

The steel seal stuff is quite a fiddle to do and MUST be done carefully. So no good taking it with you and expecting to get home in a hurry:eek:
