When I am 4H mode I notice a lot of creaking and banging when going round a sharp corner at low speed. It also seams an effort to keep the Terrano moving doing this. It almost sounds like something is about to break, is this normal?

I also find reversing in 4H mode is also difficult.

Any advice welcome! Thanks

Were you on a hard surface or a slippery surface? Although the transmission is pretty robust on these trucks officially nissans instructions tell you not to use 4wd on a hard surface. Reason being you create transmission wind up which gives the symptoms you described.

Yes, it will feel very queer when reversing with any steering lock on, will feel tight driving forwards and turning at low speed.

It was on a hard surface as I had just driven in on snow covered roads. Right ok, my mistake there! I will ensure I put it back in 2H before doing that again.

Is yours fixed or auto locking front hubs? Think the auto lockers are more sensitive and can cause problems but no hardship to fix if they ever broke. Think there’s 4wd instructions in the downloads section too.

For what it’s worth your truck was probably just telling you it wasn’t happy rather than being in much danger of trashing anything.

Hi

On my Terrano at least there is a set of 4wd instructions printed on a sticker on the drivers sun sun visor if you fold it down. Think they can go missing over time though.

Pleas do not worry if you use 4 wheel short term on tarmac , nothing will break this is a myth, what will happen is wheels will jump in order to release wind up of the transmission, Rick

Thanks for the advice, I noticed it was awkward to get back into 2h and I had to reverse then go forward slightly. As suggested it looks like the transmission did wind up. There are limited instructions on the back of the sun visor yes.

After 40 odd miles in 4h. I can attest to this.

Your front CV joints are probably on the way out or have no grease.
