Over christmas I've been using the 4WD in Hi more or less constantly.
Yesterday I put it into 2WD and reversed about 2 meters to disengage the front hubs.
I didn't hear the usual click but put it into 1st and drove off at a normal speed.
After a few meters there was a juddering from the front and then a cluncking from the left hand front side of the gearbox/bulk head area.
I then stopped, put it back into 4WD and drove off without any problems.

This juddering and clunking only seems to occur when I come out of 4WD and especially after I have had to reverse e.g. after parking then driving off.

I have tried putting it into 4WD Lo, then Hi then 2WD and reversing but the same problem reoccurs after a few meters.
I've also tried putting it into $WD driving then stopping and putting it 2WD without reversing but the juddering soon comes back.

I appreciate this is asking a bit based on what I think is a pretty loose description of the problem but if anyone has any ideas I'd appreciate hearing from them.

it does sound like transmission wind up, and perhaps 2wd isnt disengaging properly. problem now is, if you are driving in 4wd H on normal tarmac, its going to wind up even more....

As long as the lever is back in 2wd there really shouldn't be drive going to the front wheels so there wont be wind up as the front and rears are not connected. Sounds like the front hubs are jammed. Best advice I can give is to remove front hubs and strip em down and clean em. Check the lugs on the Brake ring as these crack and break off and then jam the rings together.

I would think driving it in 4wd on hard surfaces will cause wind up and possible damage.

I know I keep saying it, but you can even stick the lever up your jacksie and it makes no difference, if the little green light is still on then it remains in 4WD LOL:D

Invicta I would also crawl underneath and grab the drive shaft and give it a shake to see if theres any movement, cold be knaCkered CV joint or bearing.... not classic behaviour as you'd normally see vibration the other way round, i.e. in 4WD, but since when do these trucks perform normally...

If that's what you like to do with gear levers that's your own business:jesterbg

Thank you folks,

Sorry it's taken me a while to reply but 4 days ago my partner's Pony put her in hospital with a broken Pelvis so I've been driving the Mav as best I can using 4 and 2 WD depending on the amount of judder/noise comming from underneath.

I would of used our Scorpio but with the very cold weather the battery was dead so I had to charge that up while doing Hospital visits and sorting out the feeding/watering of the Pony.
Anyone got a large hungy dog that needs feeding? :sly

As I am self employed and the Maverick is my daily transport what's the consensus on the best way I can still drive it for the next 4 weeks until Susie is back home?
(I can't use the Scorpio as my tools won't fit in it and there is no tow bar for a trailer).

By the way have a Happy New Year,
Bern

Jack the front up then spin the wheel by hand in reverse it should disengage the hub thats what i do every time i use 4x4 just to make sure it comes out before driving on the road PS i would never use 4 wheel drive on the road

if yo have any dobts uno the hex headed bolts with an alen key and take the brake rings out. You wil have no 4wd but no noise or problems, you can also add a decent dollop of engine oil inside the hubs to lube them up at the same time. There is a download for a proper hub service somehre on here, but if i remember correctly it reconmends using copper grease in the hubs and i would use a light smear of a normal lithium type grease (or smiilar) instead.

Briggie & Plank,

Thanks for the tips chaps.
I'll be doing this on Tue as Susie back home.
Currently making a seat for the bath out of a plastic tote bin from B&Q and plastic shelving to add support. As during the first try the hot water softened the "seat" so that it started to crumple with her ladyship on it - oh how we laughed.
