As you may or ay not have read in my "temperature issues" thread after having a whole host of problems with my Mav after it overheating because of leaking water pump faulty stat etc, my maverick sounds a lot different when I'm driving it now

I've just took it out for another spin and when its driven fro cold for the first few mins it sounds normal, but after a few mins I lose the sucking sound and all that can be heard is the bare engine sound which sounds pathetic on its own hence why I have noticed the difference.

All I hear then is a kind of turbo dump I think when changing gear and loosing off the accelerator, (sounds like a pigeon cooing on a chimney)

Could I have damaged the intercooler by overheating the engine? and would this account for the symptoms I'm experiencing?

Is there any way of testing if it is the intercooler thats not working correctly?

Thanks in advance guys

check the flexi section on the exhaust :thumb2

Also check the flexi hoses to the I/C . Sometimes you'll get a lot of oil vapour from a hot oil burner and that goes in the air intake and up the intercooler. Hot oily pipes often equal a slipping off of said pipe :thumbs
Check your jublies :lol

Hmm does the Viscous Coupling come with the Water Pump? if so could it be that the old coupling was running the fan all the time but now the new one is working correctly and not driving the fan?

yes its part of the pump think thats it then:thumbs

How can I work out if this is the case??

The only time I've ever heard the car sound like this was when I waded through some water that came up to just under the door of the car, I drove it round for a few minutes after that and then when it had dried off the car sounded normal again

when in water fan got wet cooled down enough to stop fan spinning as it dried it heated up and fan cut in but sounds fan was thinking engine was hotter then it was :nenau

The fan that is connected to the front of the water pump on my car is always on permanent, is this what your on about?

I could be wrong but I think this is what happens.

When you start from cold the fan is driven until the viscous unit starts to warm up (think it's oil inside). Once the viscous unit has warmed up the drive is removed from the fan but the fan will still rotate. Not quite sure how it works but when temp starts to climb which isn't often with these trucks you'll hear the fan being driven again until the temp cools down again when the drive is once again removed and the fan just turns.

OK so could the cold water of cooled the viscous unit down and caused drive to the fan?

Could the engine of been hot and therefore driving the fan, the water flow in the engine bay either imersed or simply splash's. Could this of caused drag on the fan.

I'm convinced somebody will correct me somehow, at which point I'll retire back to the cupboard under the stairs:lol

So the noise I was used to hearing before I replaced the water pump was what exactly then?

I could have sworn that it was a turbo/intercooler kind of thing :S

I'm going to check what Plank said as well I think

with out hearing the noise its hard to say what it is but if it sounds like a roar for 2-3 mins when started from cold then disapers then it sound like the roar of the fan:nenau

OK how about taking a video (with sound) and posting it on Youtube or something for us to hear it?
