Need some pointers guys from those of you who have done this before.

Got to get an engine out of a 2.7TDi LWB and wanted to know what was involved, in what orders stuff should be taken apart to make it easy for myself.

There will be 2 of us doing it, we have an engine crane and an array of suitable tools.

Surely it's a question of leaving the car outside for a short while. Once the rain has done its job and the body has rusted away. Hey bingo! You're left with an immaculate engine.
Probably not much help, am I?

Well by far the expert in engine removal is Rick, he prefers this method when changing the clutch on these vehicles. He has done quite a few.

Others would have done it too.
Lots of things to disconnect, exhaust, fuel, radiator, loads of connectors, and cables, engine mounts, gearbox bolts, air filter, I guess some support under the gearbox is essential.

:lol this is by far the best answer!! :clap

Why don't you give the masterful Rick a ring? :naughty

Poor chap is going to need another holiday soon at this rate......

Piece of cake, can remove engine do clutch and all back together in a day, start by dropping the front diff, rad out, exhaust off, all pipes and connecting cables off except AC and PS, unbolt both pumps and tie to the side out of the way, remove starter and bolts on lower bell housing, lift engine a bit and remove one or both front mounts, this allows you to drop the engine a bit to improve access to the two top bell housing bolts, pull forward and lift out, I have never done one with AC rad in place, so guessing it may be necessary to pull it forward a bit and maybe remove the fan etc to get enough clearance, please note it is NOT a requirement to drop the diff on an auto, as you unbolt the drive plate and the engine comes straight up , well almost but the sump clears the diff, in both cases it is not necessary to support the box, Rick

Now that must have been worth waiting for lol.:thumb2
Just a quick thought, does the bonnet have to come off or can it be lifted enough for access?

Soooo Rick, when are you next free :augie

I've been getting the "judder" when cold from takeoff for a while... And my gear changes are not very smooth... Surely not a box!? I've heard about the clutch pedal plates causing changing issues?

If its one of your breakers why dont you just hack thinks out of the way with mr anglegrinder? A bit rough but itll make access dead easy wont it?

Good point Rustic, always a man for detail, I forget the obvious stuff, yes bonnet off, Rick

Doubt your clutch needs changing, more like external issues, Rick

Rick you are a legend!!!! To be honest I was planning on pulling the bumper, grille, bonnett off etc and then cutting the front off hoping that would be the easier option for me giving me better access to lower down parts of the engine.

problem is I have no access to mains so we are trying to find a portable impact gun to help with the nasty bolts, I may try and steal my brothers petrol genny for the night just to power the angle grinder

Removing the engine ain't all that bad when you are stripping the whole car [emoji38]

I reckon a few more hours tonight and it'll be ready for the crane on Wednesday as I've arranged, the guys in the garage owe me a few favours at work Tech Knowhow for Tool Lending [emoji38]

Hi you say when removing the engine it comes straight up and no diff removal or support for transmission,

In an auto its possible to get the lump out without removing the gearbox as you don't need to clear the input shaft.
Manual is a different story.
Either front diff out or gearbox moved back
