Simple really, what's better? I know the tdi's can have maf problems, but do you feel the extra power with the tdi's 125bhp, I drove a 1997 maverick "identical to clivvy's" at a scrapyard "was getting bits off it back in 2010:sly" and I couldn't tell a differance. Was only about half a mile:lol as I was checking the drive train

TDi will piss all over std TD fact. Secondly a bolt on electro box like PSI or Tunit or Vtech will get you another 25 bhp bish bosh. That's before you start any other mods.
I know you can tune a std one but really without an intercooler the engine will always be struggling with hot air

I have owned at least two of each and have driven and towed with both. I honestly believe the TDI is a big improvment. Though I have a feeling this one may be my last as the very late TDI has 'issues' and I don't fancy a 3.0.

pry tell

Could I put a tdi in my td? Or do some sort of conversion?

I looked at buying the newest possible TDI and looked at a few, they seem to have a lot of 'improvements' such as ABS sensors built into the wheel bearings that seem to be a bit problematic. Though i am currently considering adding a late x trail or a quashie to our llittle fleet :)

Well I don't think half a mile is a good comparison for performance.:augie
Stick 2.5 tonne on the back, up a steep hill, then you will notice the difference for sure.:bow

I have the Td, I keep it in tip top condition, will still do 95 mph, on a test track of course...
But in my opinion, the Td is more available for being driven and starting first time than the later Tdi versions, as there are too many things that can go wrong, eg MAF, Crank position sensor, ABS, front propshafts, under body protection doesn't seem as good, ie underseal. Fault codes that lead to wild goose chases on many occasions.
I have never owned or even driven the Tdi, I'm just summarising some issues that owners of the Tdi's have had.

As you know mine is over 17 years old from new, and the only serious things that have been changed is, one rear wheel bearing, a pair of rear brake cylinders, a few sets of front ARB drop links, one oil pressure switch as it was leaking oil, 2 windscreen washer pumps. Approx 4 or 5 glow plugs at only £8 each.
Usual tyres, battery, exhaust, bulbs etc.

All bushes, ball joints etc still original. As is everything else.
The only rust I have found is on the rubber mud flaps, they must have a steel insert to stiffen them.:doh:doh

i have neva driven the tdi either, but when i came on here originally for the damper pipe problem. all sorted now thanks to u guys:clap:thumb2

I was so glad to read that the td is less troubled than the tdi as i'm fed up with stupid code n sensor issues ect as well as its gear driven timing considering thats what brought me to buy the terrano in the 1st place :augie. i'm well chuffed with mine i've had it up some really steep slopes (like can only see the sky slopes :naughty) and thought i'd have 2 take the slope in 1st low but can defo manage in 2nd low! just wasn't changiung half way up

u need 2 take ur truck up to drumclog n give it a gd try!!!

to be fair, a lot of what "can go wrong" on the TDI is just down to age, wear and so on. MOst of the electrics are very reliable, and play an important role in making the TDI a considerably improved engine.

Tdi is better than TD, although TD is better for peace of mind!:clap

td is basic, which is one of it's strengths.

maverick tdi has no abs which is a bonus. Also from what I can see no egr valve.
