Whilst having my lunch at a roadside cafe a chap pulls up in his 2.7 Terrano and we got chatting. He mentioned he averages 47mpg on motorway journeys. I thought I did well at 37mpg on my 3.0.

Is this possible?

Did he say how fast he goes. If you sit at 50, you probably could get 47mpg :nenau

Sounds like his odometer is reading in km not miles, if you convert km to miles, his mpg is just under 30 mpg. Sounds about right.
Either that or 1/3 of his journey is on the back of a tow truck lol.

I like these Christmas puzzles lol :thumb2

I too suspect he has like my old Terrano r3mR a mph analog speedometer fitted with a Km odometer.

Sorry but 47 mpg sounds like the current tranche of manufacturers who make claims not even approachable in the real world.

No delusion like self delusion.

No! His maths is ***t.

:lol

Real life mpg on my T2 (1997 2.7 TDI): 24. And in shooting season, with lots of short drives, 4x4, towing and cold starts, it drops to about 22.

Our 2015 Seat Leon ST FR, 2.0 TDI, does exactly 47 mpg.

Didn't you ask him? How much of a saving do you get slipstreaming trucks? Then turning the ignition and coasting down hill? Pumping the tyres right up?

I asked how the heck he achieved 47mpg and said he used Shell VPower. I can't see 47mpg is possible unless you use hyper-miling techniques such as tyres pumped to short of exploding. A dicky odometer will help too. My odometer is out by 2% and speedo by 10%.

In a nutshell, he's either lying his arse off, or has no clue how to calculate mpg!

I've got a 3ltr, and I've played with speeds on long journeys, the best I've ever got is 35mph. The 2.7 isn't as efficient.

:thumbs

I just had a thought, a few months back we had a similar discussion when there was a Terrano on eBay that claimed to achieve around 47 mpg.

I recon this guy was convinced by the claim that he bought the truck off eBay, with the understanding that it did 47 mpg.
Of course we all believe what the adverts say on eBay, like the low mileage truck that sold last week with 51k miles, when in fact the actual mileage was closer to 90k

He probably doesn't know how to convert miles per litre to miles per gallon, so is still using the original claim. :doh

Shell V power can give you 2 mpg extra in some cases but then you pay 10 p a litre more for it !!

Was it a silver 04 by any chance?

I recall posting on here earlier this about achieving 37 in my truck mostly cruising on the motorway.
I just drive to & from work mostly, so this isn't the best situation to be checking MPG by.
The next time I do a long motorway journey will be when I visit my mother at xmas. I shall check tyre pressures & brim the truck again.
See what she achieves this time.

47 thats nothing, there is a thread now n then on one of the fb group pages where
some guy reckoned could get mapped to give 60 mpg, er ridiculed isnt the word.

think return trip on trailer might be best bet.
