Hi Newbie member, just bought a 1994 2.4i Petrol Maverick, sometimes the speedo works fine other times it just goes crazy and will read 60 at 30 and keep climbing until it's right round against the needle stop. Any suggestions as I dont know much about these cars. Does it have speedo cable? or is it electrically operated? Any suggestions will be gratefully received.

Thanks in advance
Jim

they are cable driven, I have a T2 Mk one instrument cluster if you need it, Rick

think it has to be the speedo as a cable fault could not cause the problems you have, speedos work by rotating a magnet inside an ali dish and before you say ali is non magnetic, yes that is true but as the magnet spins it creates an alternating field and this does impart a draw on the ali, what has happened in your case is the bearings have worn and you are getting metal to metal contact that is dragging the needle further than it should, I will have to look tomorrow to see if the Mav is the same as the T2, Rick

Thanks Rick, much appreciated.

seems there are two types of cluster, the spare I have has the warning lights in clusters at each side, the one on my Mk 1 has them running along the bottom, however from the numbers, the speedo head is the same, so if you need one I can send you one for a tenner plus post/packing, you will need to dismantle the instrument cluster to fit it but that is no problem the miles reading is around 125000, Rick

I managed to get it sorted thanks. Mate had a spare cluster which he sent, arrived today and problem solved!

One problem down....... now for the rest of them.
