My 02 plate 2.7 SE none of the 12v sockets work without the ignition (they all work with the ignition).
I had a newer one, one of the last 2.7 ones, imported through Cyprus or something like that and on that the socket in the boot worked without ignition.

I want a socket that works without ignition so I can charge phone etc when camping out. Is it normal that they all switch off?

What's the way to rewire at least one of them? - I guess I just run a wire from the battery with an inline fuse near the battery?

i'd leave existing as is and make a new one say in boot as per newer trucks with
always live, my 52 plate has this set up.

If you have 12s towing electric socket then can take wires from there, pin 3 and 4
are earth and live. wiring should be in osr corner, which is where my cigar lighter
socket for boot is.

My 05 the boot & rear seat sockets both work with the ignition off which TBH I wish they didn't as I often forget to unplug the coolbox & end up having to walk back to unplug it:doh a simple fused live from the battery to the socket would work fine if you don't have a 12S socket fitted:augie mind you i've known people to flatten their batteries enough so the car won't start from having their phones on charge

Manufacturers can't win on this one, our Yeti, as most VAG group, have two live all the time sockets, one by handbrake, one in the boot.

However, as most people want sat Nav and in car cameras, they want them to power off automatically, to save the battery, so a rewire is required.

Now, if the car is under warranty, piggy back fuse holders can be used to tap into an ignition supply, like on our Yeti, I tapped into the rear wiper circuit.
So equally, you could tap into a permanant live fuse.

Hope it helps..
But make sure the cable is up to the job, and the fuse is rated at less than the cable.
For long cables, if you need 5 amps, you might need cable capable of carrying 15-20 amps and fused at say 10 amps. Otherwise voltage drops become a problem.

Jeep sockets

To my surprise our Jeep has 2 on the dash one is live through the ignition (was cig lighter) the other is always live.

Same here, 04 and all of mine are dead with ignition off :doh

I do wish they were live when the ignition is off like my Focus used to be
