Ok guys. I've had my first spot of trouble with the truck in 2 years. After driving 150 miles north to meet pals driving down from Scotland me, my pal and our kids went out for a look around leaving the other halfs nattering in the hotel. We pulled up at a set of traffic lights in Barnsley and there was a bang and the car stopped moving. I limped it into a car park. My first thought was a near side brake shoe falling apart. This was confirmed when I noticed the hand brake wouldn't move and when I reversed it sorted itself out until I braked again.
Luckily for me I'd stopped outside a small repair shop where a guy was working on a car. After chatting to him and borrowing a small brake line clamp, we were on our way, albeit very cautiously, back to the hotel obviously with no rear brakes. Being Easter weekend and this happening at 1630hrs on Sat, there was no way of finding brake shoes or indeed anyone to assist, as I had no tools to tackle this job. So today I drove it home from Pontifract to Norwich thankfully with no problems. Tomorrow will be ordering brake shoes and hopefully fitting them. We will see. :nenau

Sounds like you were quite lucky. Got to say we have breakdown cover on all our motors.

Hope you had a nice time in Ponte

Had the same happen to me last year whilst taking my brother to pick his Jimny up, turned out the brake material glue had failed causing the material to come apart from the shoe.

Terrifying clunk isn't it!!!! Easy fix and glad you were all safe, unfortunately a non 3.0 specific fault so I can't mock :p

High res pics of the drum internals in my Project Thread if you need them matey :thumb2

The same happened to me last year while we where on holiday in Wales.
I reached out to a local off road group on Facebook and they had the shoes delivered to my tent on the campsite we where staying on.:thumb2

We've got cover too Jim but decided to drive home after doing a few test runs locally.
Last time I needed to be recovered was from Doncaster bypass services to Norwich after the head gasket went on an old discovery I borrowed. Took bloody ages. :doh

I remember reading this Elty and I did wonder wether I could get help from other terrano owners but as I already had breakdown cover and it was Easter hols and I was catching up with pals I thought bugger it. If it all went pear shaped I'd use the breakdown cover. :thumbs

Brake fail

My Mum had a similar failure on her BLMC Mini Mayfair Auto, the front pad material came off the backing plate so friction material shot out of caliper on braking for a roundabout.

Fortunately she pumped the pedal and this made the caliper piston meet the disc. Lots of grinding noises and sparks but she managed to stop OK ! They were genuine BLMC pads !

Phoned L and R where I usually get parts from first thing and they had brake shoes on the shelf.. result.
Straight to my brothers workshop and job done. It was the leading off side shoe that fell apart.
No special tools required. Gave the drums a beating with a large hammer and off they came.
Cheers. :clap

Glad you've got it fixed buddy, seems this is a common problem with the Terrano's at the minute on the forum, that's a handful of us this has happened to this year already :doh
What brand were they mate? I'll see if I can find pictures of when mine failed, if it turns out they are all the same brand, it might be worth contacting the manufacturer and alerting them to this?

The ones that fell apart were Bosch. The replacements were branded Apec Part no. SHU682. £35 for the set. We'll see how long these last.:naughty
