Rear brakes - return spring. How?!

Thanks. I found an adjustable spanner which I used to stretch the spring, levering against the wheel studs. Needed a serious amount of pressure! Used needle nose pliers to guide the end back in. Phew! Thanks for the note about not removing the spring next time. Lesson learnt! Just need the...

Rear brakes - return spring. How?!

I tried replacing a leaky wheel cylinder today but it's not gone well. Milners have sent me the wrong wheel cylinder for a start, which I only realised when I went to fit it. Quite tempted to take a file to the hole as it'll fit then... However, I unhooked the return spring when trying to get...

    Rotor arm - 2.4i Maverick

My Maverick has suddenly developed a misfire. Pulled the dizzy cap off and both it and the rotor arm have definitely seen better days. How does the rotor arm come off? It didn't seem to want to pull off. It has huge wings on it and an arrow saying 'SCREW' but it didn't seem to want to screw off...

    towing a car, electrical question

Technically, A frames are only for recovery use, so it remains a slightly grey area. The car in theory becomes a trailer, but it's only legal to tow up to 750kg unbraked. I think some of these rigs do include some sort of braking.

    Volkswagen T4 caravelle

Caravelle is the minibus/MPV version of the Transporter Makeitfit. T4 is way different to the early, rot-happy rear-engined stuff. Not saying they don't rust though... As mentioned, gearboxes can be a weakness, but pretty obvious if all's not well. 1.9 non-turbo diesels are best avoided. 2.4 is...

    Dollywobbler's Maverick

Aye. I did wonder what it was like most of the time given that we've had about three weeks with no rain at all! Not my cup of tea, but useful to practise recovery techniques. I prefer not to get stuck in the first place though!

Well, the day seemed to involve an awful lot of this!

    Dollywobbler's Maverick

Spent yesterday getting VERY stuck at Red Valley Motorsport. If you want to go and play with the mud-tyred Land Rovers in the woods, DON'T use a Maverick with stock ride height and all-terrain tyres. Oops! I learnt a lot about recovery techniques... Mind you, I was able to enjoy a good hoon on...

How you got you're nissan or ford?

Mine was the result of some very careful and long winded consideration - well, opting for a NisMav anyway. The actual purchase itself was a bit of an "oooh, there's one not too far away on Ebay no bids at £500 with a three-line description! Oh, I've bid on it. Oh, I've won it..." Six months...

    Fuel....dont panic !!

Exactly. I've got four cars, two with full tanks, two with well over a half. By the time a strike actually happens, I'll probably have got through that lot. Am I going to nip out for fuel every five minutes to make sure every car is brimming the whole time? No, because I'm not fuggin' stupid...

    LSD oil

A surprising number of cars run LSDs, especially in rally-heavy parts of the world like Wales and Yorkshire. You shouldn't have any trouble finding the correct oil. Just make sure you can loosen the filler plug before draining the old oil out...

fuel strike ..... your views ?

Depends which one. 2CV = 45mpg BX diesel = 50mpg Wife's (proper) Mini = 50mpg Maverick = 20mpg. Mustard mitt, I've not been driving the Maverick so much lately...

    Breaking Terrano 2 and Mavericks

Could do with a driver's sun visor (no idea whether there are different types/colours - this is a grey one in a Mk1) and a headlamp washer if you have them.

    Green laning necessities?

Aye. If it's unknown lanes, you definitely need some recovery gear as you don't know how likely it is that you'll get stuck.

    Green laning necessities?

Does your pal know the lanes well? I tend to take good clothes and a mobile phone with me and leave it at that if I know civilisation isn't too far away. Well, that and a map - as it always pays to look like you know where you should be driving. If you're a complete newbie to off-roading, one...

    How to check Auto hubs

This is pretty common so have a gander using the Search function. That function alone is worth the price of admission!

Welsh weekend laning 2012 - once a month

Oh well. Last time I went through that section, the water was bonnet deep! I'd never seen it that high. Good job the Mav didn't slurp a load of water up...

Welsh weekend laning 2012 - once a month

Are you referring to the water crossing at the gate? If so, I didn't drive that bit so no wonder I didn't see anything.
