    Time to say goodbye?

To be able to remove the casing of the gearbox the transfer box had to be removed. Where the transfer box mounts onto the gearbox, the gearbox had quite a bit of sludge in it. Ran a magnet through it and it is not magnetic, neither does it feel like particles. I am just a bit disappointed as...

    Time to say goodbye?

Where the gearbox connects to the engine the bell housing seemed quite wet. Even when installed on the car the weep hole was always wet. I am wondering if they replaced the front oil seal when it was overhauled in 2019. My suspicion is that they didn’t. :(

    Time to say goodbye?

To make it useable again, I just ground a bit of a normal bolt. Which did the job.

    Time to say goodbye?

Started work on gearbox today. Unfortunately a little grub screw on my transmission jack sheared off. The jack has a 200kg capacity but the gerbox including transfer box is a bit too heavy for it.

Nice work Rick. I take it that your Patrol has a solid flywheel instead of a DMF? DMF is a bit smoother but a pain in the backside as they can’t be faced.

    Time to say goodbye?

I am out tomorrow to have a reversing camera fitted to my Volvo. The rest off the week we have nothing planned so with all the tools in place should be able to start work on the gearbox.

    Time to say goodbye?

The steel beam the chain hoist hangs from is where two parts of the roof meet. It is roughly 5 metres in length and I don’t know how much more weight it can take. It should be able to deal with the weight of the gearbox as it should be able to hold a roof full of snow. However, better safe than...

    Time to say goodbye?

I also had no way of moving the gearbox off the transmission jack. If really desperate I could use my digger but this is not ideal. To make the gearbox repair a bit easier I bought a 2 tonne chain hoist and a 2 tonne girder trolley to hang it off. Once my new building is ready I am planning on...

    Time to say goodbye?

My brake line tools had seen better days and were a bit cumbersome when being used on the car. A new set of tools was completed today.

    Time to say goodbye?

No problem Rick. Always good to hear other opinion. Today I had nearly every delivery company at our house. Only had 1 pin punch which was too big for the retainers in the gearbox. So I ordered a new set. Not the highest quality available but I hardly use them so no need to break the bank.

    Time to say goodbye?

The universal joint on the front prop shaft is considerably bigger than the joint on the rear prop shaft. All in all an easy job to do.

    Time to say goodbye?

A nice new universal joint fitted.

    Time to say goodbye?

Today I replaced the universal joints in the prop shafts. They were all still working fine but as the prop shafts were off the car anyway it seemed silly not to replace them.

    Time to say goodbye?

Rick, I had indeed seen that on a video of the Patrol gearbox. Unfortunately mine does not have a top cover. My gearbox is the FS5R30A and the FS5R50B is the one with the top cover. I have found a detailed gearbox manual on Nicoclub.com. It has all the details of how to overhaul the gearbox.. An...

    Time to say goodbye?

Unless the synchro mesh has gone but I would expect a little bit of movement in the gearstick. It is currently stuck solid with no movement whatsoever.

    Time to say goodbye?

This is a diagram of the transmission shift control. Hopefully the problem is in this area.

    My new toy

That is fair enough. Once I have the space i will be looking for a lathe. What I need it for does not really warrant buying one but it keeps me entertained.

    My new toy

That looks really good Rick. Did you buy this mill with a specific job in mind or just for whatever comes its way?
  19. Flying Torquewrench

    Time to say goodbye?

That is what I am hoping Rick. Taking the casing off seems fairly straight forward so I may as well give it a go. Terrain Tamer do a full gearbox rebuild kit for the Patrol. However before I start pulling gears off I need to do a bit more research. Fingers crossed that it is an easy problem to...
