Default weights etc

Anyone know the kerbweight of a 2001 LWB T2 2.7TDI?

Also what is the towball max on the T2 and what are your experiences of towing a caravan with it (mine is 1450 fully laden)?

Regards
Lee

hi zippy, i think it's around 1800kg, regards to towing another member asked about this just the other day, you wont beat anyone away from lights though, some members have twin axle vans they tow with t2's, so a good response will be available soon.

I have (sort of) that weight caravan and a 2001 2.7 TDI LWB and when I was researching what car and caravan to buy it came up with around a 76% match, which is quite healthy I believe.

Towing with the car (bearing in mind it was my first go) didn't seem to phase the T2, with no constant stirring of the gearbox, and the van didn't compress the suspension at all.

This may also be a useful link http://www.cuddles.abelgratis.net/kerbweights.htm

Hope it helps.

Regards

Alan

Hi, I thought the max load on the towball of a T2 (Mk3/4) was 150kgs?

If your van is 1450kg's, then you 'should' aim for 7% of this to be your hitch weight, at 101kgs should be no problem for the Terrano.

As for towing with them I've never had any probs at all. I tow a 1300kg, and father-in-law has a twin axel at about 1700kg! Will both go at 60mph down the motorway all day long! With my van on seems to hardly dent the performance I get when solo!!!

I know this goes against the grain, but I have not found t2's to be the most impresive towing vehicles ever, but they are certainly competent enough, and compared to their towing capacity even a big caravan is well within their limitations.

I think though they are good all rounders and in some ways when you go for a design that makes them pretty good at everything, some things are a bit of a compromise.

I find mine carries my tent really well but at 2.2kg its hardly a problem.

The 7% guide is from the days when car manufacturers didn't quote noseweight figures

Be careful as the caravan will also have a maximum noseweight which must not be exceeded.

noseweight should be as close too but not over either the car or the caravan limit which ever is the lowest.

Good point RedMavTaj.

Plank - gotta admit I also tow the same van with a Vaux. Zafira 1.9tdci. Mainly on the summer holidays -costs less in diesel, quieter, more comfortable, and cheaper to run round on day trips etc.
BUT, if deisel was cheaper/when it was I would still pickthe T2 as first choice... King of the Road.... and main recovery vehicle on the campsite!!! ha ha

One other thing I found out when looking for my T2 is that the automatic versions have manufacturers specified tow limit of 2 tonnes while the manual versions are allowed to tow 2.8 tonnes. Not really an issue for caravanner's but an issue for horse trailers (where 1.2 tonne trailer + two 600Kg horses soon adds up).

Thanks for all the replies. I will try the whatowcar site.

I have tried cuddles before but it gave me wrong figures which meant i was towing with a 97% match - which was not the most stable.

My caravan has a hitch limit of 100Kg so i will be going with this limit since you all think the T2 has a towball limit higher than this

I dont expect the T2 to pull away like a sports car - just get me there without too many gear changes I have noticed though that my T2 seems to have a significant turbo lag compared to my other car - i will probably have to choose my gears carefully!

Which brings me onto another thought.... Anyone know the BHP of the 2.7TDI, the torque value and the reve range for max torque????

Cheers

Cheers. Do you know what is the rev range for max torque? I was surfing and a few sites mentioned 2500 but not definite. My other car - 1.9TDI - PD engine has max torque at 1800 revs which may explain why i feel the T2 is a little more hesitant - I am maybe changing up the gears too soon.
