Snap On

I have always wanted some Snap On tools. I have used Snap On stuff a number of times, mainly spanners and sockets and they are nice to use.

I have seen a lot on eBay that I would like to start building a good tool kit with.
1/4 & 3/8 Ratchets, Socket sets - Normal & Deep, Screwdrivers, Spanners etc. Just the tools that are used most of the time.

What do you think of Snap On tools?
Would you buy secondhand?
How does the Lifetime warranty work?

Certainly they used to be very good, and very expensive, not sure these days as most things are made in the far east, not sure about Snapon.

If the haven't broken by now, they are probably fine, with the exception of ratchets, which wear.

When they break, they slash your wrist.


I have heard that some of the Halfords range are very good too, again with a lifetime warranty.

I swear by snap on tools mate

if they aint broken by now they wont break as long as you use them for a purpose they are designed for

If the haven't broken by now, they are probably fine, with the exception of ratchets, which wear. The moving bits of ratchets and in fact anything with moving parts isn't covered by the guarantee but the body is, the internals are available as a repair kit for reasonable money

How does the Lifetime warranty work?
When they break, they slash your wrist. - it works fine if you have access to a dealer or have a friend that does, the dealer will usually exchange from stock (but will order stuff if need be), he just sends the bits back and gets a credit against his account.

The halford pro range is good stuff, a lot of it i the same as the stuff from J&S tools, Signet and Trident, both of which also carry a guarantee.


I have a mixture of all sorts in my own kit and used to be a J&S dealer. Snap on stuff is finished really nicely but in use is not much better the other guaranteed pro stuff, personally I quite like Facom stuff.

My collection has evolved over the years, cheap stuff and hand me downs to start with and then it got a bit more serious when I was using them professionally. When I break or wear something out I tend to replace it with a quality item as I obviously use that item hard. New stuff I assess whether I will use it a lot or not and then spend accordingly. I do keep it all in a big shiny red snap on box though.

If you had a choice between brand new Halford pro ratchet and socket sets Vs secondhand Snap On ratchet and socket set which would you choose if the prices were close?

I have some old Snap-on tools..sockets, ratchets and spanners and I find the sockets fit very nicely and spanners also.
I don't have any experience with Halfords tools, but have heard many good things about them and if they break, it must be easier to get an exchange at your local Halfords.
If I needed new tools, I would go for Halfords now

Most good quality tools these days are up to the job,for which they are designed to do.
Snap On have built their reputation on Quality and warranty.I do have some Snap On tools,mostly ratchets and sockets.Which are quite old now,and never been a problem.
I recently broke a non brand (again quite old) ratchet.Given a choice i would opt for Snap On tools.Like most folks i have built up my collection of tools over many years.Mostly on a when i need them basis,and sometimes on a small budget.
I think for small light work,then cheaper option tools are fine.

As for Snap On's warranty.If any of their tools break under normal use(Designed for purpose)Then they will replace it,no matter how long you have owned it.

Buy what you can afford to do the job thats needed theres budget tools out there that will do the job halfords machine mart evev aldi do a decent range of spanners
Dont get bogged down with brand envy a 20quid spanner is of now use if a knobs on the end of it

If the Snapon were in very good condition and the same price as the Halfords then I would choose Snapon.
All mine are Halfords though because you don't find them at the same price in good nick. No regrets either.

I think same will apply to snap on they will only replace if you bought from them and as they are only supplied direct the rep will know if you bought them from him.Ive got 4 snap on tool boxes i dont think you can buy a better box but are very expensive.I think facom are very good tools not as expensive as snap on but never had problem with any of their tools and mine are used every day.
