Following a question I asked on 'yet another' closed thread:rolleyes::rolleyes:, I want to know, what will happen if you towed a 4wd with the front wheels on a dolly? Could it be done as I thought everything turns as one when in 4wd. So putting it on a dolly wouldn't work:nenau

in the case of say a land rover with constant 4 wheel all that will happen is the intermediate diff will work, in the case of a T2 then as long as the transfer box is in 2 wheel then all is OK, Rick
 
suggest if t2 or any part time 4x4 is in 4 hi or 4lo then would need all wheels off
the ground.

or rears would drag til something broke or the prop to axle on ground was disconnected.

or could use wheel skates, when had classic rr, was spec lifted and skates on rears,
pointed out middle diff was open but suggestion was even open best not to make it
free spin that much on tow home.

this doesnt need to be in pub, what about non specific vehicle?
 
landrover has centre diff but ideally you would put the transfer box in neutral.

agreed but would only save wear on main box transfer would be turning driven by props.

probably more important where main box is automatic, know when had auto 2wd car
said lift driven axle or only tow short distance at low speed. When automatic buses
are suspend towed by front, the drive/half shafts are often removed making powered
wheels almost free wheeling hubs.
 
Fez did say a LR, just a few bolts on these and it is out, not so on a T2, another point of note re towing, and this applies to most vehicles, with the gearbox in neutral and engine not running, once the vehicle is moving then in the box the only moving part is the rear end of the main shaft, all other gears are stationary, so most likely oil will not be taken up to lubricate it, probably be OK for 50 miles or so but much more and it will risk running dry, Rick
