Camping in France/Spain

Hi all me and Karen feel we need to have a different type of holiday this year.we are planning on going 22nd aug for two weeks,we fancy camping France/spain,any cheep good campsites or routes. we like the countryside or Lakes.we are going to throw all the kit in the back of a Clio and leave the terrano at home.any ideas ? remeber we are both in our
50s.done all the beach etc.two years ago we did the Pyrinees in a old 92 discovery,as part of a guided tour. Laurie/Karen

if you are not worried about a bar or pool the municipal sites are cheap but basic (can also charge for showers which makes it not so cheap)

Good clean site, all kids to return to the tent by 22.00hrs.

NB the French school holidays are over on the 15/08/2011

nice bar and a friendly welcome.

Great swimming pool and location, plenty to see (d day beaches) if thats not your thing there is shopping in caen or bayeux.

le havre is 85 miles away or dieppe is 150 miles away

LD are the cheapest ferry company portsmouth to le havre or newhaven to dieppe.

Also the Ardennes forest by Bastogne or Malmedy is great, Germany and Luxembourg not to far away

Yes thanks for that one Paulp. much nicer to go on recomended sites. as we went on one in france two years ago it was 30 euros per night for a tent Laurie.

My daughter and her family live in Spain, near Malaga, and we spend about half the year there too. I'll email her and ask her for some ideas (locations, facilities, costs etc).

Oh, Not sure if you have an ACSI card or not - may be worth getting one. Gives you discounts on sites, (bit like a club card) and it covers you insurance wise (some sites required 'compensation' for damage) it also is acceptable proof of ID, so you do not need to give your passports over.

Only for Switzerland.. and you can buy them at Motorway service fuel stations. Of note, if anyone does go you need one for a caravan as well as car so gets expensive if just passing through!

She did point out though that camping in Spain is very expensive in July & August (100€ - 200€ a week).

Regarding vignettes etc, I have driven down, both as a driver and a passenger, to southern Spain, with and without a caravan, going to Santander by ferry, then taking the excellent roads (dual carriageway for 600+ miles to Malaga) several times, and needed no documentation at all. If you are planning to drive through France it may be different, I have not done it that way (we feel that the ferry crossing from Plymouth to Santander or Portsmouth to Bibao is part of the holiday, and is extremely relaxing).
