Default Scrap silver and gold

For anyone who is a bit short and has some tatty old gold or silver, now is a good time to offload it.

I recently used these people because they seemed to be offering the best prices. I had a big 1930s silver rose bowl (hallmarked 925 silver) that I paid about £600 for about 2-3 years ago.

Its antique value was only about £700 and in a bored moment I stuck the weight into the site calculator and up popped a figure of £930!! It cost me about £15 to overnight it with insurance and they phoned me at 9am the next day to confirm receipt and confirm the weight (which they found a few grams lighter but hell, I only used the kitchen scales) and the dosh was in my bank account within two hours!!

I wouldn't recommend doing it for a desirable antique but with the way the market is at the moment many bits of silver especially are worth more as scrap, sad but thats life.

Worth a look if you're minded, and as I say, I've used these guys and been very happy so am currently raiding the cupboards to see what else I can find....currently got an old late victorian coffee pot that I bought cheap as chips cos it was dented as hell and a small silver dish of no great artistic value - bloody soon adds up!

And no, I have feck all connection with them! LOL

Please check local jewelry shops too! Some of the online sites and the types you see on daytime TV give rather low prices. Worth checking as it could be quite a difference.

But yes you are right... at the end of the day its only metal

Good point. I scoured quite a few sites though and these guys prices seemed to be among the best at the time....and have crept up in just the last two weeks by almost 10%.

Trouble with them is you just post if off without having a clue what you might get for it. Plenty of the good sites (including the one I used) give an immediate valuation, which if its based on known criteria, like its UK hallmarked 925 silver or 9/14/18 carat gold, are pretty solid other than the final weigh-in.

I haven't sold them any for a week or two i would have to ask, but they are a 'take it to them - cash only' operation and very thorough.

The other place I occasionally use (when they are short of cash) is Bojangles.

Hmmm the site I used is currently paying 60p/gram for 925 (up from 56p a week or two ago) so I'm on the hunt LOL.
