Where to go

Any advice on where I can go to try mild off road near merseyside, Cheshire, Manchester area. I can see from the threads that you suggest not going on your own - anybody local that I could follow?

Any special prep needed?

theres good stuff in north east wales, and the peak district, maybe heading
north to lakeland.
