Default Ex MOD Terrano - Am I missing something here

http://www.mod-sales.com/auction/veh...o_II_2.7Td.htm

Look at the shape and year, now take a look at the engine

Why would they have done that?

It should be a TDi in a motor of that vintage but the picture shows the earlier TD non Intercooler

It does look to be the model with square headlights though, not the rounded separate ones. And LHD, at that - maybe used on a base in continental Europe, and 2000 being the year it was moved to the UK?
Not a good buy I'd say - what with the fluids being drained by cutting hoses

Engine is definitely a non intercooler 2.7td, even though it has the intercooler vent on the bonnet.

So reason one... the engine has been replaced from an older Terrano.
The car was ordered this way, and may have been part of a large batch.

So why the Td vs the Tdi?
Simply in one word... "reliability"

Less to go wrong on a Td than a Tdi, no specialist equipment to fix them in the field, older technology that the MOD are familiar with.
The lower power and extra fuel won't be an issue for the MOD.

I'd hope if this is the case that it was done in the factory, what a nause to be doing a swap like that for no reason

one reason but the main reason is for Electromagnetic pulses, No ECU so can't be disabled by EMP weapons.

Same reason why many newer defenders in the military still have the 300tdi.

Land Rover continued to make the 300Tdi alongside for the export market as 'Rest of the World' spec, where EU regulations were not applicable, and for the British Army who deemed the Electronic control unable to guarantee protection against Electromagnetic Pulse (EMP) weapons. - See more at: http://www.landroverexpedition.com/e....uzPaNMNx.dpuf

The 300TDi does have an ECU though

Not on the defenders, think they have a basic ecu on the discos

Defenders have a small brain for the EGR valve but for military spec ones it won't be there.

My one was removed by the previous owner.

Mechanical fuel pump is a mod I have thought about doing to the tdi.
Bud did quite an in depth write up which I keep looking at and thinking about.
First thing I need to get sorted is my smoking engine.
Glow plugs are coming out and being inspected for the dreaded ceramic tip breakdown and if that's the case it will be new engine time.
