Made a Snorkel for my Patrol

Started with some of this 83mm stainless tube.



Removed the cyclone from the nearside innner wing and opened up the hole about 5mm with a dremel.



Cut the outer wing with the dremel. Etch primed and top coated the edge then siliconed some edging on both holes.



Rivnuts into the pillar for the mounting bracket I made from some hard grade aluminium plate.



While I had the wheel arch liner out I cleaned up the inside and waxed it all. It's amazing how rust free it is. Nothing more than the odd bit of very light surface rust in a few places. The inside faces of the outer wing are like new.



Tubing etch primed and 3 coats of satin black Plastikote aerosol paint. And all asssembled.



Just need to source a better fitting piece of silicone hose for the inside of the engine bay to join to the air filter intake pipe, the one I have is slightly too big and the hose clips are oversize.

Hopefully I'm not imagining the placebo effect but it seems to have a bit more pick up and will pull a higher gear on slightly lower revs. It might even help fuel consumption on the motorway.

I'd try and sit the intake more forward as the angle it's at rain water will fill your airbox

I'd also face it sideways into the vehicle as in my experience if face forward the airbox quickly fills with insects

Ahh, that's why they normally have the last part of the tube vertical to angle the head forwards and down a bit.

Will prob have to cut the top tube down and get another angled hose. Though I'm thinking that making an aluminium "brow" for the top of the snorkel head and screwing it on might be easier.

Nice motor.

I've just made a small hood/brow for the snorkel head, paint is drying as we speak. Hopefully that, and the drain holes in the bottom of the head will be enough. Thanks for the heads up, I'll keep an eye on the airbox too.

Not the neatest thing, but I will make something better, just wanted to get some protection on there. I will see how it goes when it rains and if I need to rethink it. Might even put a foam filter on there. I noticed in the photo I put on, it looks like the front face of the head is leaning backwards, but in fact the front face is vertical, so might not be as bad as it looks anyway.

they both look s#*t hot, I was going to buy one but I think these look better I might try and make one my self :thumb2

Those bought ones are a little restrictive, mine is 3" and free flowing, with the mushroom filter it sounds fantastic too

Not sure if you are asking about my Patrol or the other Terrano, but on mine I put M6 rivnuts in the screen pillar and bolted into my upright tube(you can just get a hand inside to put the nuts on) The bracket plate is ally and tho it's not very thick it is a hard grade leftover back from my engineering days. Fasteners are stainless to stop ugly rust.

No sunroof in my motor and I drilled 10mm holes for the rivnuts and didn't see any wires inside when I painted the edges of the holes.

Might be different on a Terrano though.
