The Falklands
well, im curious, what does everyone think about The Falklands? I was young when we went to war with Argentina, but I do remember it. I know a little about the history of the Islands, the war etc, but nothing in-depth.
I'm of the opinion, that the Islands are indeed British. The reason I think this, is because Britain has held the islands since the late 1800's. When they arrived at the islands, they were uninhabited and desolate, but of course held a great strategic position etc. OK, this was back int he day of colonialisation, but as far as I can figure, the islands were empty, and as such, claimable, just like America has been, Africa, Australia, ireland etc etctec pretty much every country in the world. Anyhoo, thats complex polictics. The islanders wish to be British, they are VERY successful and from what I read, rich little island, they are doing well. Argentina as a country, in my limited knowledge, is a mixture of corruption and drugs ruled government. They appear to now want the islands due to the recent oil discovery and other resources, as I say, the Island is making money. I find it incredible that various actors and musicians, conveniently IN Argentina at the time, have spoken out against the British (thus it appears rallying support at their concerts and events, hmmmm...money?) I'm not 100% convinced over Argentinas claim to the islands, I mean, if we go by their logic, then the British should probably take back half of the world, or, if we go futhur back in History, perhaps Italy should re claim most of Europe? In fact, doesnt history show Argentina as a Spanish colony? The spanish colonised Argentina and populated it, before spain, Argentina wasnt very populated, so it Appears Argentina is happy with that peice of History?! anyway, I wish to be educated, what do y'all think of this mess? |

I think they want it for the oil/to take attention away from other issues their politicians have.
End of the day countries have always fought for land back in the day, Thats how borders were formed and thats why they are like today. Anyway by their logic should Argentina give back the southern tip to Chile? Being as it's not actually connected by land borders. |

yup, i suppose its one of those arguments a country could have all day long with another. I find it a big coincedence that Argentina decide to pipe up so soon after the UK discover oil off the coast in the south atlantic. Also a curious coincedence since the falklands publish economic results, which are fantastic.
I believe that if those islands were either taken by Argentina, or given to them, they would very quickly become a dive, as they would no doubt rape the land of all resources. Looking furthur into History, yet again we see the islands discovered by the British, then taken by Argentina during the revolution in America, then taken back AGAIN by British forces...interesting stuff. Seems to me Argentina have no more claim to the islands than anyone else, but Britain discovered them, because Britian was able to do so, Argentina (or whatever it was called at the time) were not. |

recall reagan struggling to support maggie, yet trying having some
strange loyalty to the americas. bit like when the celtic yanks feel some sort of affinity to (northern) ireland.

no idea, I assume because they are part of the Sovereignty Britain must in some way benefit economically, and in return provide the support the Islands need, I always thought being part of the commonwealth meant that all members benefitted.
