Jacking
Does anyone know if the later thin metal rear diffs are strong enough to take the weight of the truck if I stick the trolley jack under it. Obviously use axle stands before I go ahead and start working on it.
Just a bit worried after seeing stories of these diffs rotting through. |

Differential Cover
Even though the Diff housing is pretty solid I would worry that the metal end cover could be damaged. I would play safe and jack it up from the axle near a suspension mounting point.

Ex banger racer now off road maniac Lokka on the front with manual hubs Diff lock on rear 3 inch SS straight through exhaust Manly winch bumper with 13000 lb winch 10 spike ground anchor, with multiple straps and blocks Super strong body cills capped with scaffold pole 20% stronger springs all round aggressive off road tyres on wheels so just swap. Aim to get stuck and be completely self sufficient in extraction, love getting muddy, 2ft deep is good but rare. |

Remember guys this isn't the older cast iron thing that will survive the end of the world. This is the tissue paper cost cutting later type. The weight of the car isn't taken by the diff case it's taken by the ends of the axle when it's not jacked up.

In spit of your fears guys the diff will take a fully loaded truck landing on a rock, trust me, and that includes the later jobbies, what is week on those are the internals, Rick

just dont do what i once did - jacked my old reliant rialto up on the diff housing.... then very quickly 'remembered' that it only had one front wheel. cue car tipping over very ungracefully!

i did once watch my friend drive his mini into a car wash, but got his nearside front wheel the wrong side of the guide - cue the mini half in the drainage pit in the middle took three of us to lift it while he revered back out |
